Babies: 0 - 3 Months

5.5 weeks old- sleeping ALL DAY.

I don't know what's up with DD.  I put her down for a nap and she seriously goes hours and hours.  Yesterday she did a 6.5 hour nap until I finally woke her at 9pm (she hadn't eaten in 8 hours).  She ate and conked out again.  Night-time was normal- she was up again at 3a and then 6a.

So today she slept 9:30-12.  I woke her at 12 to feed her because I was out and about and I was in a good spot to nurse her while DS sat quietly and ate his lunch.  She immediately conked and it's 3:15p.

What do you think?  Just a sleepy phase?  This is definitely much more sleep than she was previously doing during the day (night-time has been the same- one or two feedings).

I do not normally wake her-- but last night was just crazy and again, today it was out of convenience.

Thoughts or advice?

ETA: Oh and I'll add that she's a total chunk- has NO weight issues at all.  And she normally only nurses 5-6 times a day.

  • You're so lucky!  DS is 5 weeks and will take short 10 minute naps here and there.  I don't have time to do anything, which totally sucks.

As long as she has plenty of wet/dirty diapers I'd say it's OK for her to nap.  Maybe she's going through a growth spurt?

  • My LO has done this a couple of times.  The Pedi said it is completely normal for babies to do this every so often and is usually an indication they are going through a growth phase.  Just look for the usual signs such as plenty of wet and dirty diapers.
  • Plenty of wet diapers.  She's only pooping once or twice a day, but according to kellymom.com, poops are more infrequent after 6 weeks (and she's only a few days from 6 weeks).

So continue to not wake her?  Last night I posted about her crazy long nap and everyone said to wake her (so of course I did....).  Nap was 6.5 hours and she went 8 hours without eating-- who knows how long she would have gone?!

  • If it were me I would wake her just to play it safe.  Call your pedi to get his/her input.

  • I'd wake her during the day and try to switch that long stretch of sleeping to overnight - sounds like she's ready to do it, so why not make it so she STTN?

    completely agree with this.
