XP: High Chair vs. Booster Seat

I really can't find a high chair that I like.  I've also read how difficult it is to clean some of the top-rated ones.  I found this booster seat: https://www.amazon.com/Fisher-Price-Healthy-Care-Deluxe-Booster/dp/B0000DEW8N/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=baby-products&qid=1276693886&sr=8-1 which is also highly rated for safety and for ease of use.  It has good reviews on amazon and user pictures with their babies/toddlers.

Although this booster seat looks like it's good for infants and toddlers, I was wondering if I would still need a high chair anyway.  If so, has anyone used the Ikea high chairs???  https://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/categories/departments/childrens_ikea/18715/

Re: XP: High Chair vs. Booster Seat

  • I like the concept of the booster seats mostly b/c they take up the least amount of space.  However, SIL used one with niece and she hated it, for the sole reason that since baby spilled food everywhere, it landed on the seat of the chair, and stained it.  Granted, she didn't have a protector or anything between the chair or the booster... if you get one, make sure to protect the actual seat/cushion of the chair.

I personally like the highchairs, and will prob get two (still not sure how to store them).  I like the Chicco Highchair b/c it "grows" with the baby (offers different heights, and reclines).  The fabric is plastic-like (vinyl maybe), so very easy to wipe down... keep a handvac handy to suck up crumbs, then wipe down after meal.

  • I like the booster seat you posted. Seems most conveninet and I do agree with Jackie though, definitely get a plastic seat protector. Overall it takes up the least amount of space and god knows how much I love compact things.
  • My house is tiny so we didn't put a high chair on the registry because we had no where to keep it and I knew I wouldn't be using it for a while. Right before we started solids, I went on the hunt and I also could not find anything. I needed something pretty compact but that wasn't an eyesore. We ended up getting one from fisher price, zen something? I din't remember the name but it is green and had dark wood legs. It matches the dining room perfectly. We didn't get a booster seat because we have woven dinning room chairs and I was afraid of the booster seat breaking it.

The Ikea chair looks like it does the job and its so cheap compared to all other high chairs. The only downside is that it doesn't adjust at all. It's nice to have one that adjusts in height and that also reclines. We never used the recline but I think it's necessary if you start solids early and the baby can not sit upright by themselves. I like when you can adjust the height andput the chair right at the dining room table instead of using the tray.

  • If you really don't have the room for a high chair, I'm sure the booster seat will be fine, but we have really liked having a high chair. It wheels from room to room, so she could sit in it while I got dinner ready and then just wheel her over to the table in the other room. Sometimes I still wheel her into the office so she can eat breakfast while I'm on my computer. The cover of mine comes completely off and goes into the washer and dryer, so cleaning is super easy. We have the Graco Mealtime high chair

Nephew still uses his highchair (2.5 yrs old), but w/out the tray, and as dropped as possible.  It is perfect b/c he gets up and down as he pleases, so I agree that having the adjustable feature is convenient.

  • Thanks for all your opinions.  You gave me other things to think about besides just feeding time.  I hadn't considered portability, like rolling around from room to room.  I do have tons of space and can store it in a corner of the breakfast nook where it would be out of sight when not in use.  I just can't find one I like that is a reasonable price.

I also forgot about mentioning it. The wheels are the best! Now that he's crawling all over the place and won't sit still if hes not contained, I roll the chair by the tv and sit him there while I get ready for work.

  • A fellow nestie on the Nurseries and Baby Gear board recommended the Graco 4-in-1 Blossom since it converts into a booster seat and you can essentially have two seating arrangements for a baby and a toddler.  Does anyone have any experience with that one?

That one looks awesome. I almost got it but I decided against it because it didn't match the room. LOL

  • LOL @ matching.  The Chicco playard would also match our living room more than one of the Gracos and Chicco has the matching high chair.  So, besides safety and reviews, I also consider how well it would blend in with our house.  But, as far as the high chairs, yeah, I think they'll all stand out no matter what, lol.
  • Please, please, please do not get the Chicco Polly high chair.  I have it and it is my least favorite baby purchase.  The only reason I haven't gotten rid of it is because I don't want to have to buy a new one.  It is a pain in the butt to clean, the tray is difficult to deal with, or and I could go on and on.

  • Whatever you decide on, DO NOT go with the Chicco high chair.  I, along, with all of my girlfriends had it and every one of us HATED it! I could probably list 100 reasons why, but I'll just list a few:

    1. It has about a thousand cracks and crevices! It is impossible to keep it clean!

    2. The instructions said not to put the cushion in the washing machine, but I did anyway because that was the only way to get the fricken thing clean.  Seriously, it was in the wash every few days.  Such a pain!

    3. The tray has this groove in the back that gets all kinds of food stuck in it and the only way to get it out is to use a toothpick. SO GROSS!

    4. The leg span on it is tremendous. In FL I had a huge kitchen and it was always in the way, but when I moved back to NY and now have a small kitchen, I had to get rid of it.  It took up half the room!!

    5. The tray does not fit in the dishwasher as the booklet says it does.

This time around I got the FP space saver.  My sister has it and it is so much easier to clean and doesn't take up any space except the top of a chair.

  • We have the Fisher Price booster seat and LOVE IT.  We never had a high chair.  I never liked how much room they take up, and we have a small house.

We had the FP booster seat for Cedric and used it from his first solids at 6 months.  We used it for him until he was about 2 and then switched him to a Cooshie booster seat so we would have the Fisher Price booster for Graciela, who started using it with solids.

She now (age 1) uses the FP booster (sometimes without the tray--it fits right up at our kitchen table where we eat all meals when it's on the lowest setting--it is adjustable). Cedric (age 3) uses the Cooshie booster but also likes to climb up into Graciela's FP booster seat.

One other thing I like is that I can use it with guests' kids of all ages.

It is super easy to clean.  I throw the tray in the dishwasher every few days but it is just as easy to scrub clean, and the whole thing wipes down very easily.  Plus I can lift it up off the chair to clean the chair very easily (just unbuckle it under the chair to release it).

I have NO REGRETS about this baby item.  LOVE IT!!

  • Chicco high chair is HORRIBLE!!!!!! WORST BABY PURCHASE EVER!!!!! I have been using a booster seat for the past few weeks because I just cannot get the food stains out of the fabric and out of the little crevices of the chair and the thing just reeks. I am probably going to throw it out on bulk day soon. IT IS AWFUL.

  • I have that booster seat for Sophie. You can kinda see it in my siggy! I originally got it to keep in the car and use in restaurants because it was cleaner. As she got older and wanted to eat at the table with us (just after a year) I added it to my kitchen chair/table, removed the tray and its been there ever since and Sophie now enjoys eating at the table with us.

I would not have only gotten this over the high chair. I like the high chair's recline feature and its a lot more supportive for when they are smaller. The tray is also bigger which is helpeful when feeding them solids or when they are self feeding because it catches more of the mess. With the booster....a lot ended up on the floor. LOL.

I have seen boosters that are more like high chairs with the padded seats and recline feature. I think MrsIHeartMike had one of those.

  • Thanks for all the opinions.

Mel, now that you pointed  it out, I do see that she's in the booster.  I decided to just go with a simple Fisher Price high chair and then I'll get the booster when she's ready for it.
