Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Am I the only one not in a hurry for solids?

(NOT JUDGING... so settle down)

Just curious why it seems like everyone is so excited to start solids... even before 4-5 months?

I am not talking about reflux babies who get rice cereal. I have just seen so many mommas of 4/5 month olds with solids questions.

Is it the "It's different and fun" factor?

Re: Am I the only one not in a hurry for solids?

  • I don't know. I am waiting until 6 months. She is eating well, sleeping well, and healthy, so I see no need to rush it.

  • Our dr said we would discuss the possibility of introducing solids at her 4mo appt. I'll admit I was a little excited to know that soon she'd be hitting that milestone. It will have its own challenges, to be sure, but I am sorta looking forward to making her food.

For now I'm just happy she's a good "drinker"

  • This is how I feel about it too. We'll start some oatmeal or rice cereal at month 5 or so...
  • I'm not either. I was with my first, but realized there is no need to hurry things along this time around.  We haven't even done cereal yet.  I am thinking of going straight to fruits and veggies in a few weeks.
  • I wasn't interested either.  I wanted to wait as long as possible to start solids.  DD told me when she was ready, even though I really wasn't! Stick out tongue  We started just last week with cereal and green beans this week.  She's doing great, and she isn't spitting anything back at us, which tells me our timing was right.
  • I wanted to wait and start trying just a bit at 5 months at the earliest.  But DS just became an eating MACHINE and is taking in way more than the recommended max of 32 ounces a day.  Regularly.  It's just too much fluid and can start to become a strain on his kidneys if we keep this up for an extended period.

So, cereal it is.  I'm with you though.  I'd be completely happy to keep it at simple bottles until 6 months.

  • I was hoping the pedi would give us the ok to start cereals at the 4 month appointment mostly because I'd like to feel less pressure when it comes to pumping. I know that the bulk of her caloric intake still comes from milk but just the thought of having her getting something other than my milk makes me feel better about my decreasing supply. So in my case, the reasons are purely selfish.

  • We just started a few days ago with rice cereal.  To be honest, I didn't want to start until she was 6 months, but she was telling me that she was ready.  She takes close to 40 oz. of milk per day and while DH and I eat she watches us like a little hawk.  She won't take her eyes off of our food.  Our breaking point was when she literally started grabbing at DH's food.  I figured that if she was ready I wouldn't hold off just because I wanted to.  So far she loves her rice cereal.

This.  After discussion with the pediatrician, we're starting it tonight.  He just doesn't seem satisfied anymore and is always hungry and wanting to eat.  He's hit between 38 and 40 oz this last week.  It was funny because they told me to make sure that the cereal didn't replace his formula and that he still get 24-30 oz a day.  Um, weren't you listening?  He's taking in almost 40!

  • We hadn't originally planned on starting so early but we decided to go ahead last week after talking with her pedi about how much formula she drinks daily and her weight. I wasn't in a hurry but it was the right decision.
  • I am not in a hurry, but my pedi said we could start when we had our 4 month appt the other day.  I was on my own, and Ella was having a mini-meltdown, so I wasn't really in the asking questions frame of mind.

We're going back next week to have her ears checked again, so I might ask him then if there was a need to start, or if we can wait.  I certainly don't feel like I am starving my child, although she is on the smaller side of the weight spectrum, I feed her when she "asks" for it.

I know DH wants to start, because he thinks I am starving her.  I mentioned a couple of times that I was worried that my supply might take a hit because the pump is not a good as Ella is for my supply, and he translates that to mean that I am not producing enough.

I also want to wait because I want to make sure her system is ready for solids - with her stomach being the way it is, I don't want anymore issues, especially if it is caused by something that we could wait on.

Same here.  DS was taking 36-42 oz a day.  Pedi suggested we start soon at his 4 month, and to NOT wait for 6 months which is what I was going to try to do.  I was in no hurry, but apparently DS was!

So we started cereal this past weekend.

  • I'm in absolutely no hurry.  We'll wait until 6 months like with DS.  And we skip cereals...go straight to fruits and veggies.
  • We are not starting until 6 months, and we have a 20 pounder.  Most of the things people claim are signs that they are ready are really OWT.  Um, no ***, your child is interested in your food?  My child is interested in every little thing I do, because curiosity is a natural stage in development.

After doing a ridiculous amount of research, I am honestly pretty disgusted by how ignorant most people are about starting solids.  We are lucky to not have a pedi that pushes the "your baby is big, they need solids" rhetoric. There is a reason that the WHO and AAP both changed their recommendations to a straight up 6 months.

  • Honestly, I really wanted to wait as long as possible. But my milk supply was dwindling because of stress and chronic pain I am going through, so DS wasn't gaining enough weight at his 4 month appointment. The pedi wanted me to supplement with formula, but he would not take a bottle. He hated the taste of formula, so she suggested cereal so he would get used to the taste. She even suggested that he eat it up to 3 times a day if I couldn't get him to take a bottle so he could get the milk. Anyway, it eventually helped and he's now having about two 4 oz. bottles a day and one feeding of cereal at night plus BFing. It's what I had to do and he was definitely ready. He took to the spoon right away. He's had rice and oatmeal. He likes the oatmeal a lot better. However, we will be waiting awhile to start baby food. He's doing well and gaining, and I like it the way it is.

  • We were in no rush at all. We had planned on waiting until 6 months. She showed signs of being ready at 5 months. I was a bit diappointed but started. We have started chicken and squash so far. No cereal so far. I am a pediatric dieititan and we waited as long as possible per my Olivia.

    i'm right there with you

  • We are waiting too. I'd love to wait till 6 months but I think DS's ped will not allow that. We've struggled with his weight and him not taking more then 3-4 oz a bottle only 4-5 times a day. And he's FF.. So I'm worried that the Ped will have us start cereal sooner because of that.

DS just doesn't like to eat, He's so active and looking around and rolling and playing that taking a bottle isn't in his interest.

I'd like to wait till 6 months..

We are also waiting til 6 months.

She is doing well, growing well, sleeping ok and is happy.

We also have food allergies on my side of the family so I don't want to risk it.

  • I wanted to wait until 6 months, but around 4 months 2 weeks my supply starting decreasing as her appetite was increasing.  Her pedi suggested that I start solids because it would be better than starting her on formula.  I went on super pump mode to try and keep her on breastmilk as long as I could, but decided to start solids a week ago.

This is what our Pedi said too. I am hoping to start them around 4 months if he feels LO is ready since we have been having to supplement with formula at daycare since my BM supply can't keep up. I am hoping if LO is eating solids too we will have to supplement less.

  • I'm honestly laughing at seeing this post again!  Am I the only one that feels like it's being asked about once a week or so?

There is nothing wrong with waiting and you are by far not the only one.  My cousin waited until her 3rd son was nine months before starting him on solids.  But she's also very granola, so we weren't really surprised she waited even longer than most.

But seriously, I think the biggest sign that you are not alone is that this question is asked so often.

I also really do think there is nothing wrong with starting before 6 months if your pedi agrees and your LO is ready.  There will always be those who disagree with you.  I mean, honestly, look at the FF/BF and the WM/SAHM arguments. Somebody will always know what's better for my child than I do. Confused

I'm judging by when MY SON is ready, not when some random study or non-fiction writer expert says he is.  If my pedi, who knows my son and his specific eating habits well, disagrees, then I'll hold off until she agrees he is ready to.

  • We're waiting 6 months plus.  DS has a milk protein intolerance which I was told makes it a bit more likely he could have food allergies if we start solids early.  He definitely wants some of our table food and goes for my plate when I'm holding him at the table, but I see no reason to start solids until at least 6 months, and plenty of reasons to wait.
