F/U: waiting 6 months for cereal

Thanks for your help yesterday. I was able to give DH a bunch of info, and now he's on board with waiting until 6 months too.

I like the idea of trying a fruit or vegetable or meat instead of cereal, like some people said. I've heard that cereal isn't very nutritious, just carbs. One site I came across said that cereal started to be recommended b/c companies couldn't figure out how to get enough iron in formula, so they put it in cereal and doctors told moms to give the baby cereal. Wonder if that's right?

Re: F/U: waiting 6 months for cereal

  • My doctor said that the cereal is for iron.  Otherwise I would have to give DS an iron supplement.  I EBF, so I think it is for formula and breastfed babies.  Also, rice cereal really has nothing good going on for it.  I skipped the rice cereal and went straight for oatmeal, barley and whole wheat, all of which at least have fiber.

  • Glad you guys are on the same page now.

Our ped said we could skip rice cereal too b/c it is basically just carbs, like you said.  He recommended oatmeal.

  • We do oatmeal... I feel like there is some nutritional value with fiber and also how can LO stay full on just fruits and veggies? If I eat a piece of fruit or veggies and nothing else, I'm hungry like 10 minutes later... maybe that's not the right way to think about it, but that's what I've been doing. Plus he still BF's throughout the day
