BF moms - when did you intro paci?

I forget what we did with DS1!

Milk is in and BF is going well,  I'd like to use pacifier for the car or if I can't BF right away.  However I don't want to mess with supply or latch.

When did you start?

Re: BF moms - when did you intro paci?

  • In the hospital.  BF is still going good so no issues w/ nipple confusion.  We use a Soothie one though so it's more like a nipple I guess.

    DD1 born 5/24/10.

    Missed M/C at 14 wks Feb 2012.

    DD2 born 5/14/13.

    Missed M/C at 9 wks July 2015.

    Expecting someone new 4/17/17.

  • I started at about 2-3 weeks.  They say to wait until BF is well established.  I became a human pacifier so had to find a paci that worked to save myself!  If I didn't, I may have given up BF all together.

  • DS was given one in the hospital to calm him down while they tried to put an IV in.  We've used them on and off since.

  • We started at 1 week and we have never had latch or confusion issues.  When he's hungry, he definitely knows the difference!

I totally agree with this.  It was exhausting!!

  • Our ped. recommended waiting until after LO had regained her birth weight, so it was around 2-3 weeks.  We haven't had any issues.

  • We tried earlier, but with both babies, they refused pacifiers until 7-9w (7 for DD1 and 9w for this one-- yesterday she took it for the first time).
  • Day 3. It was the only way to get LO to put himself to sleep at night.

  • We introduced one to her while still in the hospital. She hasn't had any nipple confusion or latch problems.

I used a paci once in hospital when she was verrry fussy and I was exhausted. Then we didnt use it again for  a few weeks, but I gave it to her yesterday off and on for fussiness.

If your baby had no latch issues from the start, my pedi says giving a paci anytime is fine. It won't really mess up your supply if you use it just for occasional fussiness. However its also good to let your baby just sooth herself at your breast whenever you can.

  • Day 2. Worked well for us, no nipple confusion.
  • I was bound and determined not to ever...but after one night of inconsolable crying (night 3 after birth) I went out and bought one.  Once I saw my little guy sucking away while sitting in his boppy with a  face that looked like he was completely stoned I knew I was onto something and it was time to revise and rewrite my rules!
