XP: Alberta or other Canadian Mommies... how have you gone about finding childcare?

I also posted this on 6-12

I am returning to work in November.  Britt will be just over a year.  I am currently starting the hunt for a dayhome.  For those of you who have already found one, did you go through a daycare/dayhome society and be put on a list or what other methods did you use to look for childcare.

I have been looking on kijiji for licensed dayhomes in my area but a lot of them I'm finding are only looking for children ages 2 and up.

Any tips would be great.

Thanks.

  • I found one through my coworker. I got the last spot and that was when I was 7 months pregnant. It is crazy around here.

Do you have Wee Watch there? They have a list of dayhomes you can get.

  • I'm in Calgary and I just googled Calgary Day Homes and it came up with a few different websites that had day homes listed.  I am actually going to get one of our friends that is a SAHM to watch Madi when I go back to work part time in September.  She lives 5 minutes away from my work.  I did find a day home that was $450 a month for part time that was close to my work but when I was talking to my friend a few weeks ago and told her that I was looking for a part time day home and then told her it would just be so much easier if she would watch her when I went back to work and that I would gladly pay her $500 a month and she said that she would love to.  I would rather pay a bit more to have someone that I know and trust to watch LO rather than a stranger.

  • When I was 2 mos pregnant, I put my name on a list for local daycare/dayhomes in the small town where I live (just outside Edmonton).  I think I'm still on the list for dayhomes and DD is 18 mos old!  Anyhow, a friend of mine told me about her dayhome (which is in Edmonton, but on my way to work) and they luckily had a spot for me to take DD two days a week.  I work 30 hrs (3 days) a week, but my DH has her one of the three days.  I pay by the day, and the DCP is so busy and full that I pay only when I send DD, even if it's less than twice a week.

I have seen lots of ads on Kijiji, but I'm glad I could use a dayhome that was personally recommended to me. Now my DD absolutely loves her dayhome days!

  • I googled Edmonton day homes, but I won't actually need one for another year :D

the Grant MacEwan daycare is supposed to be fantastic, but they have a three year wait list and aren't accepting any new people, on top of starting at 19 months.

    Good luck!
