Two Under 2

Anyone without an SUV/van?

I was wondering if anyone had a car that fits two car seats well. If so, which one? Are you happy with the space?

Re: Anyone without an SUV/van?

  • We had a Toyota Camry for a month or so after having DS.  The two car seats fitted great in the backseat and I could even squeeze between them to sit when needed.  We ended up trading it in for a minivan because we have a huge double stroller and it didn't fit in the trunk without jamming it in there.  The Camry would have worked though.

  • I have an SUV now. But before I had a 2002 Saturn L200 and would have been able to fit two carseats in there no problem. And the trunk would have been plenty big enough for a double stroller. However, do they even make Saturns anymore?? I really liked mine and had no issues with it. To be honest, we didnt even really have a good reason to trade it in. It was something we just kind of did on a whim.
  • I have a corolla and we'll be squeezing 2 car seats in there - both RF'ing.  I can't wait until we get a minivan!

  • Both DH and I have two small cars.  A Toyota Corolla for me and a Saturn Ion for DH.  It fits both carseats just fine but there is little room for anything else back there. I would love to have more space but both of our cars are paid off this fall and we will hang on to them for awhile and use that money to pay off what left of our credit cards and then get bigger cars.

  • Don't fight the minivan!  Get a Honda Odyssey!
  • I have a Saturn Ion and it fits two carseats fine.  I plan on driving it until the wheels fall off....got daycare to pay!!

  • I have an old Mercedes Wagon...works great with 2 carseats (W's Britax RF behind passenger, Graco infant for baby I keep during the day behind me), and has tons of cargo space.  It was my mom's car, but she and I traded cars (I had an '06 BMW 5-series wagon...that fit 2 carseats also).  I actually was babysitting an older child also one day, and had Graco behind my seat, Britax RF in the middle, and Graco high-backed booster behind passenger.  It was tight, but they all three fit!

Even if you didn't go with the wagon, the back seat would be the same in a bigger old Mercedes or 5-series BMW (and you can get both used pretty reasonably, surprisingly!)

Pretty much this exactly!  I am still driving the Camry but we are in the process of buying a minivan (we plan to have more kids so we would need a bigger car, DH's car is at the end of its road, plus we like to camp and need more room to pack everything).  My van should be ready to pick up tomorrow!

  • DH has a Mitsubishi Galant which fits two carseats well enough. I have a Nissan Sentra though which is not going to cut it. Two seats don't fit side by side and I am too tall to drive pushed all the way up to fit a carseat behind me.

  • Another Saturn Ion owner here.

Technically everything fits......but we are pretty packed in there....to the point where if DH is with us 3, the diaper bag, my purse, and whatever other baby stuff is coming on that particular trip has to go on his lap if I drive. I'm 5'8" but can drive comfortably a little scrunched up apparently because DH is 5'6" and he can not stand how close I am to the dashboard. I don't notice that though.

We are fitting a Graco Snugride (behind the driver) and Britax Blvd, forward facing now, back there (with like 8 inches in between where I shove a few things) and a Baby Jogger Elite double in the trunk with precious little room left over.  But, yeah, if no other adult comes for a ride, we manage quite well lol.

  • I drive a Prius, and it fits 2 RF seats very well. Right now I have both an infant seat and a RF Recaro, and I can put the seat in front of the Recaro all the way back without touching it. The drivers seat is in front of the infant seat, and I caan scoot it back far enough to drive with no problem, but DH has to put the handle either all the way up or all the way down to make enough leg room- it can't be in the middle position where it takes up horizontal space. I've also had 2 RF convertible's back there with no problem.

You can't sit very well in between the seats though- I'm pretty small and I don't fit.

There's tons of cargo space in the hatchback, but I don't know about a double stroller since I don't use one.

DH's Infiniti fits 2 seats in the back pretty well too, but it doesn't have quite as much space in the back seat as the Prius.

  • Both DH and I drive Subaru Outbacks - mine is an Impreza and DH's is a Legacy. We love the amount of room and get wonderful gas mileage. There is room for both carseats and the dog in the back seat. The double stroller fits with extra room in the back of both cars as well.
  • I think most sedans fit two car seats.

We have a tiny ford escort and it fits two giant toddler carseats fine.  When we had the infant carseat and a toddler carset, I could squeeze between them, but no longer.

Now we're trying to figure out what to do about a third carseat.  We know we can't keep the escort, but someone is giving us a volvo, and we're going to try and find the skinny carseats so all three can sit in the back when we need to drive somewhere (which isn't often as we mostly walk).

Which, I suppose, makes a difference.  If you drive a lot or take long car trips, you may not want to make a sedan work.
