Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Would you buy your 1 year old a plane ticket?

We're traveling this summer and will be taking a 3 hour flight.  Our flight is in the middle of the night (11-2am).  Would you buy your 1 year old a ticket?  I hope he's asleep during the flight.

  • Nope.  We're flying with J for Labor Day.  And he'll be on our laps.

  • no.  we are traveling with ds when he will be 15 months and are not buying a separate seat.  if the flight is not full, you can ask to be moved to a row with an empty seat without having to pay for it.

last time we flew with ds, we took our boppy and when he slept, he layed across it.  i highly recommend using it as a travel aid!

Yes.  We are travelling with our 8.5 month old this weekend to NJ, just a 3.5 hour flight and we booked her a seat.  We were concerned in case of turbulence etc. that she would be safer in her car seat  than in our arms.

We're also traveling to Ireland when she'll be 15 months and have booked seats for that trip too.

  • nope-save the money while you can!  he's only a lap baby for so long-then you HAVE to buy a ticket! Smile

  • We are flying with Jackson next week.. a 5 hour flight and we got him a seat.  It is a long flight, he is squirmy, and not having him in a carseat scares me.

  • We are fling to Florida in Sept (L will be 13 mths old) - the flight will be 45 min, then an hour layover; then a 3 1/2 hour flight.  We leave at 7am & fly thru the day.

We DID purchase L her own seat...and especially now that I'm prego again, I'm SO glad we did...I will be 4 mths by then & have a baby belly, so I couldn't imagine trying to hold onto L during those flights.

It was more expensive obviously, but I think in the end it will be definitely worth it.

  • We'll be flying cross country when DS is a little over 1.  As of now we haven't purchased a ticket for him, but we're constantly checking the airline to see if the price goes down.  We probably will end up getting him a seat because he's so squirmy!  At least that way we'll have more "wiggle" room.

    Exactly this!

We have flown about 4 times with DD, and we never bought a ticket for her. We flew to texas a couple months ago and that was a a couple hour flight with a layover. Luckily all but 1 flight was full and we were able to have dd's car seat with us, which she slept in. It worked great. All our flight attendant's were SUPER nice and were very accomodating.

  • Yes. I have done 5 flights with C as a lap child and the last one I bought him a seat. Getting him his own seat was the best decision ever. He is so squirmy and so hard to keep a hold of. Just having a place that is "his" was such a big help. And he did fall asleep right away and my arms were free to hold my book and flip through my magazine. Unless $ is super tight in the future I plan to buy him a seat from now on.

  • No, I wouldn't.  At that hour of the night I would guess he would sleep most of the time and be easy to hold.

We've traveled a lot with our kids and don't buy them tickets until they are well over 2.  DS was 8 months on our last flight and squirmy but it was only 2 hours.

We're flying to FL in the fall and I will be holding our wiggly 15 month old.  Not looking forward to it but it's only a few hours out of our lives.

  • When we buy tickets we get aisle and the window and leave the middle open. If its not a full flt it is almost always left open. If someone is sitting there we ask if they want to trade. He doesn't sit in the seat but its nice to have the extra room. That is if you are flying with an airline that assigns you seats. GL!
  • Would you drive without your child in a car seat?  Buy you kid a seat.  Don't be cheap about safety.  There was a news story the other day about how dangerous it is to fly with a lap child (for the child not you) and how in the event of an emergency you will be told to place your kid on the floor.  God forbid your hit turbulence or some other issue, you could crush your child to death.

  • Nope. ?We are flying to Rome in September with my mom, dad, DH and little sister at night. ?We plan on taking full advantage of *not* having to buy a ticket for G. ?We are crossing our fingers that she will sleep through most of the flight and that with the five of us we will be able to trade her around enough where its not too bad if she doesn't sleep. ?

  • We flew to Alabama a few months ago to visit family, and we bought DS a seat. At first I was really against it...but let me tell you, I am soo glad we bought one!! We expected DS to sleep the whole way as it was a nighttime flight, no such luck. Awake the entire time! On the way home, all of the lap babies were crying and fussing...DS sat happily in his seat. IDK, that is just our experience! Some airlines also have lower fares for infants...it would be worth looking into! GL!
