OMG-Can't find childcare for 3mo!!

This is more of a rant...I've called 15 places and all are full.  I had no idea that daycares work on a school year calendar and that most fill September by the previous February!!

I feel totally at fault for not searching or even investigating this prior to now.  I wasn't planning on going back to work but I will be in one month. I'm getting worried that I won't find availabiltiy.  Any words of advice/recommendations?  I'm looking for care in the Heights, Memorial, Westchase, Galleria, Oak Forest, Garden Oaks areas.  My son will be 3 1/2 mo old by then.

  • It might be too far, but try Brimhurst KinderCare.  Most places, you have to call the second you get that positive test to get on the infant waiting list.

They are spendy, but Creme de la Creme might have an opening for infants.

You should also check out this site www.kidcareyears.com.

  • Have you tried Garden Oaks Baptist Early Leaning Center on N. Shepherd?
  • Try Memorial Drive United Methodist, Spring Branch Presbyterian Academy, or First Baptist.

Unfortunately, pretty much this.  The DC that we are in now had a year waiting list for the infant room!  Seriously.  We had to find another DC to fill the gap until we got the "call" (luckily, in only 9 months).

My coworker used to use Avalon Academy.  They are ITL - you could try them.

  • Technically, they're in Spring Branch, but since they are between the areas you list, how about Fair Haven (on Gessner) or St Christophers (Blalock)? Both are maybe a mile north of I-10 on their respective roads.

  • That blows. We're in the burbs and our daycare had a 7 month waiting list - we paid our deposit in November for a June start date. Have you considered maybe in home care until the daycare opens up? Check the list -if there are only a few names on the list you may get in anyway if people change their minds - happened for a friend of mine.
  • Thanks for your thoughts however, I've called all of the ones mentioned except Creme de la Creme.  All have waiting listsSad.  Kidcareyears.com was a big help to locate daycares but don't believe their star rating system.  I visted one that had 4 stars and it was aweful.  One with only one and a half star was actually 10 times better than the one with 4 stars. I'm starting to search on Care.com for babysitter until space opens up.

You should email kidcareyears and tell them that! i know the mom who started it (she lives in my hood) and she takes comments very seriously. she secret shops all the daycares but also has another mom who does it with her. maybe the other mom didn't rate it right? maybe it's been a while and they need to update. again, she will really take your comments to heart. this isn't like a corporate website, it's literally a mom who started this due to her struggles and friends struggles to find quality care and she left her job to make it work... so, email her :)
