2nd Trimester

are the crystal light on the go packets ok to drink?

They contain asparatame, and based on random searches online, seems they are ok while pregnant.  Anyone actually heard a yay or nay from your doctor though?  I haven't had a chance to ask my doc, and honestly, I need anything I can to get myself to drink enought water every day...

Re: are the crystal light on the go packets ok to drink?

  • I think it's a personal decision. I am avoiding all artificial sweeteners. I, however, do not have an issue with water, so, if you do, perhaps the benefit outweighs the risk.

Would you enjoy citrus fruits in water or something similar?

  • I heard that apartame was not good.  I was told that before and I conceived.  Look for Fuze drinks.  They are really good and natural.  You could also try propel.  My trainer suggested that because it does not have aspartame in it.

i avoid aspartame and artificial sweeteners regardless of my womb's status... but that's just me.

how do you feel about mint iced tea? or homemade lemonade? (or even just adding lemons, limes or cucumbers to your water to make it less boring?)

those are my go to favorites for getting more water.

i think i've heard that the crystal light packets are fine in moderation, but as i said before, i don't drink the stuff, so i can't be sure.

    good luck!

  • iI drink Crystal Light on a fairly regular basis. Artificial sweeteners in general are rated moderately safe (the amount you have to ingest to even possibly cause problems are HUGE) so it's not one of the things I go out of my way to avoid. But then again, I'm pretty laid back about most of the pregnancy "rules".

ETA: I've seen at least two of my OB's drinking Diet Coke  so I doubt they'd ban me from all artificial sweeteners if I asked.

  • I put cucumber in my water or fresh sliced fruit like apples or oranges...it helps me drink more of it without the added stuff mixers give you

I avoid all artificial sweeteners, pregnant or not.  I do believe that it's "safe" during pregnancy in moderation though.

If you're looking for low calorie, maybe try water flavored with fresh fruit or iced tea.

I'm assuming you're looking for something light to avoid the calories, but honestly I used to be a fake sugar junkie before I researched it and when I made the switch to pure sugar years ago I was sure that I would gain weight but nope, not a pound.

  • Seems to be a personal opinion. Some docs say it's fine, others will advise against it. SIL drinks diet coke like crazy and her doctor was fine with it while she was pregnant. He basically told her she'd have to hook herself up to an IV of aspratame for it to effect the baby. I have decided to avoid artifical sweetners while pregnant. I'd rather play it safe and just drink regular water, but that is just me.

Propel has splenda in it, so it's just subbing 1 artificial sugar for another. Your best bet is plain water but if you can't/won't drink that, then a little Crystal Light/aspartame is fine.

I don't consume artificial sweetners, pregnant or not pregnant. They are not good for you and certainly not good for a baby.

  • I absolutely hated drinking water before I found out I was pregnant and almost laughed at the OB coordinator when she told me how much to drink.  She said that one of the crystal light packets was ok per day. Just think when we were all in utero our moms drank, smoked and had as much caffeine as they wanted. And we all turned out ok.

  • I'm with the other posters...a little bit in moderation.  Here's just what I do and it definitely helps me drink my water (I'm being monitored for low fluid as well, so I really have to drink, drink, drink).  I use ONE of those individual packets in a 2 liter pitcher of water.  I keep it in the fridge, and drink that (usually two of them) during the day.  So, my water is lightly flavored, but I'm not gulping tons of artificial sweetner.

  • I'm not a fan of plain water either.  Recently I tried brewing then icing decaf herbal tea, and it's delicious!  There are so many flavors that I don't think I'll ever get bored.  I also like flavored seltzer.

PS My OB said no to fake sweeteners.

Same here! Why don't you try having teas instead(mostly decafe of course). Sweeten with sugar or agave nectar even honey. You can have them iced or warm. Or even lemonaid. It's for your and your baby's health try your best to drink it without adding anything artificail to it.

  • I'm not into the artificial sweeteners even before pg.  But I just saw an ad in a magazine that they came out with some without artificial sweeteners!  I gotta check it out.

  • My midwife said they were a no-no.  I didn't really question why because I don't use them anyways...I say ask your doc!
