D.C. Area Babies

reston/herndon daycare.

I posted this on the VA board, but am thinking it's more suited for here. I'm sorry if this board gets hit with daycare posts all day long, but any advice would be much appreciated-

we have my LO (12 weeks) In ChildTime daycare center in reston, which was never our first choice... but it was the only spot with availability for when my DH and I had to go back to work. We are on the waiting list for Simon Center, but i wanted to see if anyone could recommend daycare Reston or Herndon area? I want to get on a few lists to up our chances of getting called quicker.

Re: reston/herndon daycare.

  • we really like happy hearts in herndon (off of centreville rd).  it is a smaller center, and they don't have a lot of infants right now (i know there are several siblings that will be starting in the months to come).  the owner and director are really great.  like most centers, there is some turnover with the staff, but  i have really liked all of the teachers.  most importantly, my child has been very happy there after a not so great experience at another center.

  • We are on the wait list for Simon Center too, have been for what feels like forever (I think we started getting on wait lists when I was 17wks), but I really liked them so we are hanging in there! Smile

We are also are on the wait list for Reston Child Center, I have nothing but great things to say about them as well.  We also liked Winwood but they were a bit more, price wise, and it sounded like an even longer wait that alot of places we had looked at.

    Good Luck!

  • Ya, I heard good things about Reston Child Center too; maybe I'll get on their list. Ugh! We were totally on top of the ball when I first got pregnant, getting on all the waiting lists for the best centers in our area, but then we up and moved (from arlington to reston) two weeks before LO came!!! So we had to start all over very late in the game.
  • What are your concerns with ChildTime? We were very close to placing LO there, but ended up placing her a little closer to home, but have not been 100% happy and have been thinking about switching to ChildTime Reston.

I've heard great things about Reston Child Center, Winwood and Childrens World in Sterling.

  • Another vote for Reston Children's Center.  It is a co-op, NAEYC-certified and many of the caregivers have been there for decades.  It is different from a lot of the other centers in the area, so it's not for everyone, but we love it.
  • I am also using Happy Hearts children center off Centreville Rd. in Herndon. DS started when he was 10 weeks old, and he's been very happy there. I agree, the owner and director are wonderful. It's a center, but it's small in size so there is a "homey" feel to it.

There is definitely room in the infant room currently.

  • Sorry for the delayed response to this string! I don't get alerts when comments are posted, and it took some time for me to refer back to it..

I'll be honest- some of the violations that I found for Happy Hearts on the VA Social Services site got me nervous; granted, there are violations for all centers, but these were more serious (to me) -- chemicals in unlocked cabinets, knives at a level where they could be accessed by children, etc. Just made me a little nervous.

I called Reston Children's Center to see about getting on their list.

As for ChildTime.. not huge concerns per se. We just liked the curriculum better at a couple of the other centers (which would be more relevant when LO becomes a toddler). They seem to be fine at ChildTime, though they've had real trouble getting LO to take his bottles.. so far are averaging two bottles a day, which is way less than what he should/usually has. That said, he IS fussy with bottles sometimes. I'm sure that will improve as he gets used to them and vice versa. (frustrating in the meantime though, as it's totally screwed up his schedule, as he comes home hungry and gets up at night again to eat).

I was just about to call them to see what their waiting list is.  What did they tell you?  I need to find care for my 12 mth old son in Reston area.  It's hard dealing with the change and feeling good about any place I find for him.

  • Actually, we had quite the number of developments in the last week-

First, we got a spot at Common Ground, which is a spot I LOVE not far from our house.. but, a day later, we found out we also have a spot in Simon Center! So we're going to go back and see Simon Center tomorrow morning, and then decide which one we want to switch our LO to. Never ended up calling the Children's Center, since these two places materialized..
