EBF-question for you ladies

My son is a PIG, and I feel as if this wk i'm not producing enough milk for him. I usually feed one side at a feeding, well this wk I've had to use both because one side just doesnt seem to satisfy him. How, if at all, do you get your breast to produce more?

Re: EBF-question for you ladies

  • no BFing yet, obviously, but the way I understand it, the more he eats from you, the more your body will make.

I don't have any secret hints though, sorry!

This, i've heard. Maybe i'm not giving my body enough time to catch up. I could just be impatient!

  • My friend had this problem and her dr told her after every feeding to pump for 10 mins to stimulate more milk production....worth a try I suppose. It worked for her :)
  • They have a growth spurt around 6 weeks.  I have heard that babies who normally eat on one side will go to both for a while during a growth spurt.  B has eaten on both sides from day one.  If you really want to increase your supply, you can try mother's milk tea or google power pumping.  ( I have heard of people using power pumping but don't know exactly how it works.)
  • Remember that you also have to increase your own intake of liquids, esp water, when trying to increase your output.

Also, I agree, its a supply & demand issue.  Your supply needs time to catch up to his demand.  Its likely a growth spurt.

  • You can try to increase your supply by pumping after a feeding.  I have been doing this right after the morning feed b/c that is when I feel like I have the most milk.  Power pumping, as Blayne mentioned, is when you pump for 10

  • Nicole, Up your water intake along wth your protein intake. Also try eating oatmeal and drinking mothers milk.

Power pumping can also help. Always offer both breasts at each feeding, it will help with the supply. Give your body a couple of days to adjust. If he seems like he is starving you can try giving him an ounce or two of formula after he feeds from both breasts.

Lots and lots of water!  I was pumping after each session, even when he only ate one breast to up production as per my midwife's rec.  The nice thing was that when he was still hungry I was able to supplement with expressed breast milk.

I was also drinking mother's milk tea, at least two big bottles of water, oatmeal in the morning and my MW also told me to have a beer a night, apparentley the yeast helps with production.

  • Thanks ladies!
