Someone called the HOA on us for our fence

Well, that didn't take long. I will admit that I am bothered by it/.

We sent emails to the HOA when we moved in about fence approval and heard back to go to the township. We did and sent our plans and got approval from the township and got the permit.

We went out to dinner and there was a "love note" on our door. Apparantly, one of our neighbors across the street doesn't like that the fence is going to the back of our front porch. Thank goodness, we saved every email and have the copy of the permit about the approval. It's done, but I'm still bothered.

Re: Someone called the HOA on us for our fence

  • This is exactly why I do NOT want to live where there's an HOA. They tried to start one in my current neighborhood- and we said hell no. I do not like that someone else can tell me what to do with my property.

  • So the fence comes too far forward, toward the street?  HOA stuff is so crazy to me sometimes.  We didn't even get approval when we  did our deck, but our neighbor said a HOA guy came out and took pics of it.  apparently it was fine, as we never heard anything.

We're in the process of getting a fence right now also and DH rolled his eyes at me when I said I sent the stuff in.  We're on a corner, so it's not like no one will notice!

Hopefully you can set them all straight tomorrow.

  • That stinks, but at least you have everything documented. I don't see why people care as long as you keep your home and yard up. I was watching Property Virgins tonight and this neighborhood didn't allow BBQ pits, SUVs or trucks, and something else absurd.
  • Ah the joys of HOAs - seriously, I think some people just like to find things to complain about.  You're smart to keep everything documented, and hopefully everyone will simmer down after the "newness" of the fence wears off - lol.  Argh.

Our house is a corner lot, but the house faces the corner of the two streets, not facing one street. Our lot is kind of diamond shaped. The fence is approved by the necessary people to go to the front of the house. Most of the houses in our area have the fence go to the back of the house. This is where the (I assume the jackhole of a neighbor) wants it. However, that cuts our yard by 2/3's.

We have all the emails and stuff we have sent to the HOA and the township. The fence posts are in, I'm not about to change it now. They can kiss my arse. What pisses me off is that we did everything we were supposed to do and they wait until we aren't there to leave a note. I'm mean grow a pair and tell us.

  • Things like that make me glad I decided against an HOA. I was reading through the old covenants guidelines that I was given (they aren't enforced) and they are so ridonk. What kind of loser has time to complain about something like that?

Your dd looks so grown up. She's a pretty one. :-)

I would be bothered too. It reminds of when my friend let her kids paint her wood fence that she was replacing later that week. One of her neighbors was so bothered by their innocent scribbling, that they called the police about it. The police laughed when they came out and said they couldn't do anything. When my friend found out, she was so pissed, that she typed up and delivered a letter to all her neighbors and said that what going to be temporary was now permanent thanks to whoever called the police. And it was for months.

[br] Love it! People are so petty. Who really has the time or energy to write letters, make calls, etc about these things?!
  • Actually, I will admit I am one of *those* people! However I'm not goign to be petty- I won't call the management company on a neighbor if a car is parked in the street for one night (even though that's against the rules) However I have called about a car parked on the street day and night for more than 2 weeks.

Our HOA rules were in place when the community was first built so everyone should know them and abide by them. Or at least know to reference them for fences, pools, etc. Our rules aren't as restrictive as some communities, but ours are basic ones to keep prop. values up and the community looking good.

We have a 5 member HOA Board that are homeowner's and the HOA pays a management company to handle "customer service",  mailings, violations, etc- but they report to the board.

I've actually gotten myself so "well known" to the board that when one of the boardmembers moved from the neighborhood the other members appointed me as a replacement.

I understand that and I agree with that. We followed every rule we were supposed to do and emailed the HOA, the township and documented everything and got our necessary permits. It makes me mad that we followed the rules and people are still in our business because someone doesn't like how it looks. Tough crap.

  • I hate those things.  Our city ordinances are more than enough to deal with any sort of problems, they cover fences, parking, ect.  We also have Neighborhood Planning Units that cover whatever the city doesn't and can stop specific things in a community.

I don't need some power hungry group of 4 or 5 people deciding that I should be fined because I don't bring in my trash can for 26 hours or I park on the street.  Just imagine what parking on the street could do for property values.  Just look what has happened in NYC.

I don't think these types of groups help build community, I think they divide it.

Yeah really. I haven't said crap about the neighbor who has a boat in his driveway, or the neighbor who has a RV in his driveway right now.

One of the neighbors, called the HOA on my neighbor because they thought the pool flter was too loud. Turns out it was the house radon system.

WTF?! How can a HOA tell you what kind of vehicle you can drive?! That's messed up.
