Allergic reaction to hummus?

I gave Ryan hummus today, which I have done in the past. After he ate it his face around his mouth was really red and hot.

I think maybe this has happened before, but not as bad. In the past I chalked up the red marks to the scratchy edges of the Wegmans Coco Pops that I put the hummus on.

Could he have a sesame allergy? Maybe something else in the hummus (not many other ingredients though)?

Should I call the pedi, or just avoid giving him anything with sesame? I wonder if I should avoid peanut butter, hmmmm......this is concerning because he has never had any issue with food before.

Re: Allergic reaction to hummus?

  • We had a similar reaction when we tried giving Rosie cinnamon in her applesauce for the first time.  I brought it up with her pedi, who said it's just a contact rash, and doesn't necessarily mean she's allergic to cinnamon.  She eats it just fine now, with no reactions, so it was just something that happened a few times.

I would probably call pedi just to be sure.

  • Sesame is similar to peanuts.  I would probably hold off until a little older to try again, and also hold off on peanuts/peanut butter until older.  The big concern with allergies is that following exposures can have more severe reactions.  The good thing is that often kids outgrow food allergies.  You have the 1 yr appt coming up right?  I would just hold off on giving him any more until then and just run it by the pedi.
  • i am super allergic to sesame oil & seeds.  maybe from the sesame in the tahini?  has he had the other ingredients before?
  • Why did the bump eat my other post?  I had linked and everything.  I gtg to bed bc I work in the morning, but do a quick google.  Other foods similar were a bunch of other nuts, and then kiwi too.  Just so you know what are considered related in case other reactions happen or if you wanted to delay those as well.

  • I did see that other info jnk, thanks!

He has not had chick peas separate, but I am thinking the tahini (sesame) or maybe the soybean oil. It was the Sabra brand, pretty limited ingredients (less than 10).

I will have to get a kiwi....but I think I may have given him that before. Maybe it could be a soy thing....his tummy does not appreciate tofu.

  • Here is a great resource to learn about food allergies and intolerances. I've taken a few food allergy classes and this site has the info down tight and easy to understand. A lot of people confuse an intolerance with an allergy and vice versa. They are sooooo different even though some symptoms are similar. Hope it helps and when your not sure always call your doctor! Good luck!
