but my sister's was planned for 36 weeks. she didn't make it. Jackson was born the day before her shower was supposed to be. this time around, we threw her a shower at 30 weeks.

I would, personally, rather it be earlier than that. Some babies come early, yes, but also some expectant moms are QUITE uncomfortable by that point. There's a lot of "work" to be done after a shower, too (organizing, thank yous, un-packaging, possible exchanges). I'd rather have the extra time to not worry about that stuff.
I personally would want it earlier, just in case you need extra stuff or the baby comes earlier.
I had mine set to happen around 35 weeks and D was born the friday before the shower.. so I didn't have one and ended up having a sip and see type thing around 37 weeks. (when D was home)
I was either 36 or 37 weeks. I was still in denial that I would have a healthy baby at the end of it all that I put it off as long as possible. It worked just fine for me and I enjoyed having something to use all my nesting energy on.
Obviously I haven't had one yet, but my friend just had hers yesterday and she's about 32 weeks. Like PP said, I would worry that at 36 weeks you run the risk of having delivered already and/or not being able to put everything away and get thank yous taken care of. I think I'd like mine to be earlier, but it totally depends on how you feel.
I just had my shower this weekend at 37 weeks. It went off wonderfully!! Many of my friends and family said it was the best baby shower they'd ever been to, which means a lot since it was extremely hot!! I was a little uncomfortable, but it was very very fun.
In hindsight, I probably would have had it a little bit earlier, but only by a few weeks. I think right around 34-35 weeks would have been perfect. I did start to get a little nesting anxiety, and now that the shower is over I feel MUCH better! I got a lot of great items, but at least now I know the things that I still need to get.
I had one at 33 weeks and have another one at 37 weeks. The one at 33 weeks was perfect, timing wise. I wasn't too big and uncomfortable and there has been plenty of time to organize and send out thank-you's. Now at 35 weeks I'm getting much bigger and more and more uncomfortable, so imagine by 37 weeks it's only going to be that much worse. Plus I'm very concerned that LO can come at any minute. It's stressful. I would like to have our nursery finalized, but I can't because I'm still waiting on the shower stuff. I think at 36-37 weeks you are going to feel uncomfortable and if you are a planner it's going to be hard dealing with the last minute details with only a few weeks left. If you can have it earlier I definitely would.
ETA: Now that I'm nearing the end of pregnancy, my head is just kind of in a different place than it was a couple of weeks ago. Mentally, I think I'm just wanting to prep for labor and deliver and also having the baby here. The last thing I want to be doing is scrambling to put together nursery furniture, going out to buy last minute items, making returns, and writing thank-you's. I kind of just want to be in this zen like state, but my 37 weeks shower is kind of preventing that. That's just me though...
Mine is being planned now, and it looks like it will be either the 1st or 2nd week of August. Which would put me at about 32-33ish weeks. I think you might be uncomfortable after the 35 week point. Maybe see if you can have it moved up 2-3 weeks?
I'm chiming in late, but I went for earlier due to the off-chance I'd have them early (and was in total denial that I would have preemies). I had mine at about 30 weeks and it worked out since they arrived at 34w. And ditto on the uncomfy-ness...if it wasn't at my house, I wouldn't really have been up for it. I was pretty miserable at that point on.
With this PG, mine was at 34 weeks. Anything later and I wasn't comfy sitting for long periods of time. Same thing happened with Ryan's pregnancy - I couldnt' sit at all with him after 36 weeks.
Nobody said life would be easy, they just promised it would be worth it.

This! Also, I felt less cute with each passing day! I think mine was around 30 weeks or so.
I had mine at 29 or 30 weeks and one a few weeks before. I got hospitalized at 31 weeks and stayed till baby was born, 36w3days. So for me 36 weeks is tooooo late

Chiming in late too. Mine was held when I was just past 32 weeks. I was put on bed rest at 30 weeks but was allowed to go. It was ungodly hot and miserable (even in may!). I spent days making slow trips to Target to return and exchange stuff and made a mad rush to send off thank you notes. I thought C was coming any day and it was more stressful than I'd have liked. I begged him every day for the two weeks I was on bed rest to just hang in until I could have our baby shower. He stayed until I was almost 39 weeks.
Re: Baby shower - how many weeks were you?
i haven't had one yet.

That's just me though...
We are doing my sister's a little early b/c
1) she lives out of the area and we are having it here in the South Bay
2) she will be teaching summer school
3) it was the only day everyone (well mostly family) could attend.
She will be about 29/30 weeks
This! Also, I felt less cute with each passing day! I think mine was around 30 weeks or so.
