Natural Birth

New here with a few questions

Hello- I'm new to this board and glad I found it! DH and I are expecting #1 in November and I've been doing a lot of reading about natural births/doulas/midwives etc. and that plus my personality makes me feel as if a natural birth is the way to go for me. Although I will be delivering in a hospital (no other option than that- and we are not ready for a homebirth) I would really like to either hire a Doula or have my husband as my birthing coach. I know that he is completely capable of being present and not overwhlemed, but I want him to be as prepared as possible. Other than a birthing class and a "daddy bootcamp" class offered at the hospital, can anyone suggest a class (in Greensboro, NC) or reading material that would be helpful for him. If the reading material is online, that would be even better.

TIA!

Re: New here with a few questions

  • For couples not wanting to hire a doula I recommend 2 books

    1. The Birth Partner by Penny Simkin (this is one I recommend to all dads, even my clients) https://tinyurl.com/thebirthpartner

    2. The Think Womans Guide to a Better Birth by Henci Goer https://tinyurl.com/ttwgtabb

I also have some great articles on dads and doulas here: https://www.stlouisdoula.net/FAQ/Dads.html

  • I have heard awesome things about Hypnobabies, it's a do-it-yourself hypno birthing and comes with a cd for who will be your birthing coach. I believe it was developed by a woman who taught bradley and hypnobirthing classes. You can go to www.hypnobabies.com for more info. Anyway, it's what I plan on using for labor this time around.

  • We hired a doula.  I'm almost 33 weeks, and she has been there for me since the beginning of the pregnancy.  We are focusing on relaxation methods during the stages of labor and delivery.  She will also be there for me postpartum for a few weeks.  I'm delivering natural in a hospital, and because most hospitals aren't "pro-natural" or just aren't used to natural deliveries, my husband and I were set on having a doula.  She will be an advocate when the medical staff are persistant on interventions.

Good luck with your choice!  You can do it!

  • I second the Bradley classes - they were great for us and we would not have been able to deliver naturally without them. They really prepare you for what to expect and help you relax through labor. My husband was a great coach, but we also had a doula. Since it was our first baby it gave us more confidence as things progressed to have someone there that could say with confidence/experience "this is normal," "this is what is supposed to happen," and "its time to go to the hospital." I think my husband and I would have ended up going to the hospital a lot earlier had it not been for her, which could have lead to more interventions. Just something to think about if you're considering a doula. She didn't interfere in any way with my husband being the coach. Congrats on your pregnancy!

  • I third the Bradley classes.  But, I do want to say that just because your husband is your coach doesn't mean you shouldn't hire a doula.  We had both - DH was my coach and we hired a doula (and Jennair was our assistant doula ;)) and I felt very comfortable with our team.  Each person had his/her own responsibilities and roles, and it was a comfort that DH didn't have to be THE ONE the whole time.  Also, it was a comfort to have someone there the whole time who had been through this before and could comfort us, tell us what to expect, help explain any tests the nurse was wanting to do, etc.  The doula filled that role very nicely.
