SIDS, etc.

This post is a bit all over the place, but I think everything is related to SIDS, so here goes...

1.) I put the bedding in the crib and I couldn't resist putting those adorable little bumpers up, even though I realize the supposed increased risk of SIDS.  They're staying in the crib until the baby is actually sleeping in there and then I'll decide what to do.

2.) Our friends were over this weekend with their one month old baby.  They sleep her on her belly because they say she doesn't like to sleep on her back.  Does anyone else really do this?  I honestly thought that this was the biggest "no no."

3.) Does anyone have this or something similar:

Said friends use this for peace of mind.  (I guess because they let the baby sleep on her belly.)  Brian insisted that we get it now so I ordered it with our gift card today since it's an online only purchase.  I was surprised that I had never heard anything about it before.  Apparently it's a hot item because I tried to order it over the weekend and it said out of stock.  It was back in stock this morning and when I just went to copy the link for on here, it's again out of stock.

Re: SIDS, etc.

  • I have an angelcare and love it.  The audio monitoring component is horrible but it is a great peace of mind.  And Ian sleeps on his back.  I agree that tummy sleep is a big no no.

I had never heard of these either. Here's a link to a post from a while ago on YHL, they have something similar.

  • 1.  I will probably do the same with the bumper.

    2.  I've heard the same thing as you - face up to wake up.  I'm not taking ANY chances.

    3.  Love the idea of the monitor!

My sister's second daughter always slept on her stomach. It was the only way she would sleep, and as people are very afraid of this, this was the most recommended way for your infants to sleep for decades. The doctors said its safe, but obviously, there are cautions for both back and stomach sleeping.

  • I have never heard of those monitors, so I am no help with that. G sleeps on her back at night, but too be honest she does not like it...She loves to sleep on her stomach..The only time we let G sleep on her stomach is when we are awake and watching her...typically for her naps...She sleeps so much longer on her stomach than her back....BUT with that being said I am not willing to take the risk and have her sleep on her back during the night when DH and I are sleeping...I would rather wake up every hour on the hour than her sleep on her stomach and something God Forbid happening...But I do not mind during her naps, because I check on her constantly....
  • I have heard that the monitors go off CONSTANTLY & parents can't get any sleep because baby is always making little movements that alarm them.  But, I obviously haven't used one, that's just what I have read.

This. My sister had a similar one for my nephew for medical reasons, but didn't use them w/ her other 2 kids b/c they're such a PITA.

  • I think the 10 year baby difference is aging me now.  I had bumpers the first time and I plan to use them again so she won't bang her head if she gets too antsy.

I purchased one of the side sleeper positioners so I can alternate the side that she sleeps on to prevent flat head and bald spots.

To tell you the truth, I have never seen one of those monitors before.

  • Alex sleeps on his belly only during the day, or when I'm near him. He LOVES sleeping on his belly. At night, he is on his back.

This is what I've heard about them also.  They do say that babies sleep better on their tummies, but to me, this is a no-no.  I sleep H on alternating sides, and began this at about 8 or 10 weeks.

  • 1. we got a breathable bumper for our crib: https://www.amazon.com/BreathableBaby-Breathable-Safer-Bumper-Cribs/dp/B0013FGWD0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=baby-products&qid=1276562919&sr=1-1

     2. If baby sleeps better on the belly we'll nap on the belly and do nights on the back. I know lots of families that do this.

Odds are that every single one of us on this board slept on our bellies almost exclusively as babies and we lived to tell! I think it's ok as long as you are watching.

As soon as they can roll over themselves, pretty much all babies opt to sleep on their tummies anyhow.

    3. I'd probably recommend an Angelcare monitor over one of those pads.

  • 1)  I've had the bumper in G's crib since he started sleeping in there at around 2 months.  before that he was in a co-sleeper.   He still sleeps up against it.  I took it off for one day and he got his leg caught up to his thigh.  It went back on right away!

    2)  People do it.  I didn't do it.  At least not until he started rolling over on to his stomach on his own.  After that, not much you can do.

    3)  We use the Angelcare and I love having it.

  • re: Angelcare:

This is a pad as well that goes under the mattress.  It did go off quite a bit when G was smaller and would move all the way to the end of the crib.  It goes off when it doesn't sense breathing/movement for 20 seconds.  Now that he's bigger we don't get those false alarms.  When we had a floor fan in there near the crib it would detect false movement so that had to go - figured this out when I took G out of the crib and forgot to turn off the monitor.  I plan to use this well into his toddler years - I will know if he gets out of bed!

  • also...sleeping on his belly really helps w/his gas. Alex has constant belly aches, and when he's on his belly he is farting up a storm, he's less fussy. I will not however let him sleep on his belly at night, but when he flips on his own...nothing we can do.

  • I have heard of the Angelcare, but I have heard mixed reviews.  They are not like the apnea monitors they send preemies home from the hospital with.  I have heard they have a lot of false alarms.  Tummy sleeping is a no no, but babies who are used to sleeping on their backs who wind up on their tummy are more at risk than babies who are used to sleeping on their tummy.  I never decided what to do about the b umpers, but ended up taking them out because I thought the bright colors distracted her.

I STILL use my Angelcare monitor so I can tell if ds gets out of his bed. I did not have problems with it going off and LOVE it. My son had a mild case of sleep apnea because of enlarged adenoids so it gave me piece of mind. I'd rather have a false alarm then something worse.

My son had really bad reflux and could NOT sleep on his back because he would choke and it was painful for him. I was so scared to let him sleep on his stomach so he slept in his bouncer until he was 6 months old. Then I let him sleep on his stomach.

As for bumpers, I used the breathable bumpers when he was little. Not as cute but again, piece of mind and safety is most important!
