When should I wash the baby clothes?

We got soooo many outfits & onesies at our showers this weekend (I'll post pics on the blog later this week).  I'm scared to wash everything b/c I don't know how big she'll be!  We got TONS of newborn clothes.  Also, if she's bigger or smaller & the other clothes don't end up matching up with the seasons, I would hate to have the tags off & not ever be able to use them (although at that point it would probably be too late to return them anyhow).  Does this make sense?  Am I thinking too hard about this? lol

Re: When should I wash the baby clothes?

  • I'm in the same spot right now, although I don't have a great quantity of clothes.  I'm actually planning to buy the detergent and wash everything this week just because I want to have it done.  (Keep in mind that I just have the bare minimal since we don't know the gender.)  I think I'd suggest washing enough of the newborn clothes to get you through at least a few days and then after she's born you can assess whether or not it's worth it to wash the remaining clothes or return them.

Maybe some of the mommies can weigh in with better advice.

  • I'm in the same boat right now. I can't decide what to do with all the clothes. I am thinking I will wash a few of the newborn things and a few 3 month outfits and leave the rest until after he is born. We have some good hand-me-down stuff that is already washed so those will be used early on as well.

  • I washed everything around 36 weeks. I only had maybe 10 newborn onesies, 2 sleepers, and maybe 3-4 outfits and I ended up going out and buying more sleepers and outfits in NB size because she was in them for so long. I would wash clothes that you have through 0-3 so that those are ready to go when they fit as well.

  • I washed all my 0 -3 month clothes around 35 weeks plus all my newborn stuff.

If you are scared you could always just wash a few NB sizes to carry your through the first few days until you realize how big your LO will be.

  • I must be the only person who didn't wash the baby clothes the first time around and is not planning to do so this time either.
  • I'm washing the gender neutral clothing only in the event dr. made a mistake about the baby being a girl. Our washer/dryer is pretty fast, and I'll have lots of help around to wash need be the week of the birth. Also, it's gonna be pretty hot anyway when she's born (8/1) and we won't be going anywhere, so I'll probably just keep her in a diaper and swaddled for the most part.
  • I plan to wash the clothes when I go on mat leave start of July.  Mind you, my going home outfit, I am getting one of each gender and asking mum to wash them for me when we find out what we have.

  • I washed it all except a very few things I got gift receipts for.  I didn't think I would be able to return the other stuff.
