Well, it's basically a XP from 24+, but my question is a little different. Anywho.
DS is getting pretty much PT during the day, just a few accidents here and there. But still nowhere near ready to wear underwear for nap or bed. The problem is he really does not (read: refuses) want to wear diapers anymore. I guess part of the "diapers are for babies" thing we've been telling him. Oops. Yesterday he even took his diaper off after he was put down for nap and then of course wet the bed and was so upset about it. So I'm hoping Pull Ups will be a good solution for naptime, but have no idea what to do about nighttime. From what the girls on 24+ have said, Pull Ups aren't good for overnight use.
Any suggestions? Has anyone else had this problem and found a good remedy? I can't think of anything that would be absorbent enough for overnight, so maybe a good way to convince him they're ok just for night without ruining the daytime thing?
Re: XP: diapers for nap/nighttime only
I think it's great he's refusing diapers. (Can you blame him?) And it's not a horrible thing that he's upset that he's having accidents. Why?
Because accidents are a very good way to learn. I'd just make sure you have good mattress cover, changes of sheets/blankets/pjs handy, and be ready to do some laundry. It would be a shame to train him to go in diapers again.
Well, from what I understand, staying dry while sleeping is a maturity thing, not something you can "train". So while I agree with you that it is a good thing he doesn't want diapers and accidents are a good way to learn, I don't agree that is true for naps and nights. I'd pretty much be traumatizing him until he's developmentally ready to stay dry overnight and that could be months or even years!
Laundry doesn't scare me (see the CD badge in my siggy). But I'm not going to change his sheets once a day and twice a day on the weekend until he *learns*.
I think since he does not want to wear diapers that you'll have a great time working with him to use the toilet or hold it at nap/night.
We stopped using a diaper at naps the first day she went in panties. I used an ultimate crib sheet so when she had an accident I pulled that off and clean sheets were underneath. (Just a warning, the less blankies/stuffed animals in the bed at this time the better. DD's poor dolls have been peed on a time or two.)
Good luck!
How long has he been in underwear? DD was having accidents overnight for the first week and a half that she was daytime trained, and then the accidents stopped. Not sure if it was because she's older or if she just got used to holding it.
If you don't want to go that route, DD wore pull-ups overnight for a while without problems. She's not a huge pee-er, but I honestly don't think that pull-ups are any different than diapers other than how the sides are constructed.
Children in countless countries around the world are completely PT by 18 months. Many by 12 months. I don't think kids in our part of the woods are any less capable.
I don't buy the 'ready' business either. Although even by all conventional, Western standards, your boy sounds like he's 'ready'.
You can limit fluids before bedtime. Tell him to get up and go to the bathroom when he wakes up. There will be a few misses, but I'd give him a chance to surprise you.
But if you're not ready, then it sounds like you'll have to wrestle a diaper/pull up on him and beg him to keep it on. We never used pull ups, but they look just like diapers... just with different sides as said above.
GL!
We've been using pull ups at night for just under 2 years and have never had a problem with them leaking. They make overnight pull ups too.
Night time training is completely different from daytime because DC has to actually wake up when he/she needs to go. My DD is a super heavy sleeper. We've even talked about wearing undies to bed and waking up to go potty. I briefly tried sticker rewards for waking up with a dry diaper. DD really does want the stickers (and prizes that go with), and she's upset that she can't wake up when she needs to go. Pushing the issue isn't going to do anything but upset her when night time training is just something she physically can't do yet.
