Stay at Home Moms

4 down, 1 to go! (and a deep ?)

My sister (one of out 3 that were/are pg) had my niece, and her first daughter, on Saturday night:)  I am loving this aunt thing...babies everywhere and I'm not responsible for any of themStick out tongue

Now, with the "explosion" of nieces and nephew this year, I will go from 5 to 10.  Come this Christmas, that is going to hurt the bank a bit unless I say something.  Like the others, I use to buy for all 5 but I was thinking that maybe on each side (explain in a bit) the kids could draw names like the adults do.  Try to keep up here....4 of my siblings (and 5 nieces/nephews) are from my biofather's side.  The other 4 (and 5) are from my mom.  I am the only child they had together and while most of my siblings interact with each other (FB, bday parties), we don't celebrate holidays together.  So I'm the only one with this 5-to-10 issue.  I hope that makes sense:)  My question is, if you were one of my siblings would you think this is a good idea or that I was just trying to help myself out?

  • I would suggest not buying anything for adults and just the kids. There will be 8 grandkids in my family this Christmas. I enjoy seeing the kids open stuff, so I would try to cut back a bit and still get the kids something.

  • I agree with not buying for adults.  DH is one of 6 and so we tend not to get anything for the adults and just buy for children.  We also don't spend a lot (I shop all year round and get great deals;-)

  • I'd say don't buy anything for adults.  You can get kids a little something pretty cheaply if you plan in advance.
  • Ditto about not buying the adults-

if a sibling has children- i buy for the children and sibling buys for my child/ren.

And i totally second scoping deals out throughout the year- its important to start a 'gift closet' stash for holidays/birthdays etc.

  • We don't buy for any of the adults except for grandparents.  I have 15 nieces and nephews and they are more than enough to buy for!

  • In my DH family, the grandparents buy for kids, I usually bake something for each family for the morning after Christmas, SIL w/Brother bring candies they make for each fam, SIL(DH sis) brings a plant or something similar for each family (greenhouse gal).Last SIL is out of state and not really involved. So, we don't exchange gifts at all except for a thing for each fam. It got this way after we had our 3rd, DH sis became a single parent with 3, and DH bro got remarried and got step children. The holidays are about being together, not gifts - and in today's economy, the gifts just get too expensive to buy for each and every person - even just kids.

  • My mom is one of seven, so there are a lot of nieces and nephews, and spouses. So that side of the family does two drawings, one for the adults and one for the kids. The adult limit is usually around $40 and the kid limit is usually $20.
  • I agree with everyone else.  Don't buy for the adults and buy something small for each child.  If you start early you can find some really great deals.  GL
