How to slow milk supply? No bad replies, please.

I an going through a battle with mastitis and thrush and I'm tired of all the pain. I have to pump every 2-3 hours beacuse I have such a forceful let down and I'm afraid that if I don't immediately pump and drain the milk that I'll get mastitis again.

It's like a vicious cycle. Please no bad replies, I know some of you have a hard time with your supply but I'm having a hard time managing mine as well.

I'm just looking for help to ease up on my supply so I can relieve the pain. It hurts so bad it's painful to hold LO.I would also like to leave the house every once in a while. I feel like I'm stuck at home since I have to pump all the time.

Thanks

  • pump when it is painful but otherwise just try to wait it out.  It will only take a couple of days to slow down if you aren't pumping or nursing.

  • You could try standing in a hot shower and just letting it run out. That way you relieve the engorgement without stimulating your breasts to make more milk.  Also a hot pad on top of your breasts works too.  I'm sorry breastfeeding has been so hard for you.
  • Fresh cabbage leaves inside a sports bra.  Leave 'em there till they wilt and then replace them.  It helps with the inflamation.

  • The more you pump, the more you will maintain your current supply. As PP said, try to only pump for relief. Have you tried putting cabbage leaves on your breasts? You can also take a warm shower and massage the breast before nursing. Good luck!
  • Thanks for the tips! I will try the heating pad trick when I can't hop in the shower. As for the cabbage leaves, I plan on going to the store today!

One question about pumping. If I only pump till I feel relief won't I get mastitis again? The LC said that is why I most likely got it the first time. That my supply came in heavy and from not draining it all I got mastitis.

  • drink alcohol (if comforyavle w it- during a safe time after feeding baby-red kelly mom for when it is safer).  use an antihistimine one time (again if comfortable w safety rating.  I had a glass of wine after feeding dd and one squirt of antihistimine bc I had a cold and whammo the next day my milk slowed way down-not what I wanted right then--but both really slowed me down.

PS what are you doing for the mastitis and yeast?  I think I have both but I recently quit bfeeding and I'm wondering if they will go away on their own if I'm not feeding or pumping.

  • An oversupply definitely has it's own issues...I had it with both kids. You should definitely try to cut back on the pumping slowly to get to the supply you NEED, not the supply you have now.  If you are pumping for 10 minutes every feeding now, go down to 7, then 5, then start skipping some sessions, etc.

Yes you need to watch for infection, but keeping going at the oversupply you have will only keep the cycle going. If you notice a clogged duct, etc forming then pump fully on that side, but not daily if you know what I mean.

Also, watch any tight clothing/bras, don't sleep on the side with the infection, etc.

Make sure to boil the heck out of all your pump parts, bottles parts, pacis, etc or you'll just pass the thrush back and forth.
