Upstate NY Babies

Someone teach me how to be a good coupon shopper.

I went to Target today.. We needed a new PUR faucet thingy because ours was cracked and spraying water everywhere.. They were on sale there and I had a $3 coupon.. so I got it for like $13.something..

I also had a target coupon and a manuf. coupon for cottonelle and we were almost out.. so I had $2.50 off that..I bought the enormous pack because its a lot cheaper that way. So it ended up being like $15..(why is toilet paper so FREAKING expensive.. it makes me crazy).

And I wanted to buy those oxyclean packs and I had $3 off 2 coupon.. so bought those (they were $6.99 there for the smaller pack, I actually think Tops had them for like $3.99) plus one of those gel sticks..which I think was $3.99..

Only other things I bought was a small pack of batteries that i needed and Target brand cheese sticks.. and I had one of those $5 target gift cards from buying diapers.. and I STILL spent $45..

  • I thought I was a good couponer until I started following certain blogs.  :)  My two favorites are www.moneysavingmom.com and www.hip2save.com

  • Yeah - I would like to see someone's actual receipt!!! Scan it and show me! I saw a coupon lady on one of the news stations buy like $150 dollars worth for like $5. I just don't get it.

Can someone explain coupon doubling? I thought Tops and Wegmans only doubles coupons up to a dollar....so if you have a $.75 off coupon...you can only get $1.00 off total...right?? This is another thing I don't get.

  • I totally stink at coupon shopping.  One of my friends is really good at it.  She's a SAHM and loves to be out an about- she thinks nothing of carting the kids all over town according to what coupons she has and who has stuff on sale.  I don't have the time or patience for that!  The art of coupon shopping is to find places that offer "rewards" (like CVS) for certain purchases.  These places will also often stack manufacturer coupons and store coupons on top of sales.  The idea is to buy what you have to according to coupons- regardless if you need it NOW or not.

if you have a 75 coupon they will double it to make it 1.50. I am a reallly bad coupon shopper. Today we went to walmart and I saved a whopping $9.50.  My bill was $160 so we didn't do very good.  Except at walgreens b/c i get my discount and use coupons and I see what all the customers are buying.  The thing with some of those people is that they do'nt need the stuff and just buy it b/c there is a coupon and you get a coupon back.  So to me that is pointless to have crap sitting around your house that you will throw out.

  • LOVE the blogs that jenjar mentioned!

It sounds like you're doing a good job. Those stories about spending $1 on a $150 are total B.S. If you bought a bunch of random junk we could all do that too. Plus, if you watch- the women are submitting saved up rebates/extra care bucks to make a good showing.

You can't look at it as just the amount you're spending. By buying that Pur thing, I'm sure you're savings tons over bottled water. Considering what you bought, the savings was good!

Some of my ramblings... the oxyclean packs are probably expensive because of convenience, isn't it cheaper to just buy the tub and scoop it? Batteries, we wait for a super good deal and buy a ton. We got these 50 packs, BOGO on Black Friday and haven't bought them all year. I usually only buy toilet paper at CVS- DH insists on Charmin so I feel your pain. I have one of their E.C cards so they always mail me $4 off your $20 purchase coupons. I pair that with a sale + manf. coupon and hopefully get CVS bucks back.

  • I can't do the hardcore couponing, because I pretty much only shop at Wegmans, and I don't buy a lot of processed foods.

I also find that when I see people who save a TON of money by couponing they're buying like, 4 bottles of Advil at CVS.  Plus, I feel like I would have a house full of body washes and razors and shampoo.

So I just end up clipping some coupons and using them only on things that we need.

  • The only places I do well with coupons is Price Chopper and BJs.  BJs I use two manufacter's coupons and one store coupon on most items.  My bill is usually around $100 after coupons, with about $30 in coupons and instant rebates.  I generally buy diapers, wipes, cat food, kitty litter, laundry soap, toilet paper and paper towels at BJs.  At Price chopper, I also save using both store and manufacter's coupons.  Price Chopper also takes competitor's coupons.  Plus I stock up on items that I use when on sale.  I think, my last Price chopper trip was around $100 final bill, saved $25 in coupons and I dunno how much is sale items, maybe another $30?
  • We only have Walmart down here for grocery shopping and they don't double coupons, so that sucks....but when I was back in Ohio, doubling up to a dollar meant that if you doubled $0.75 you'd get $1 off, not $1.50.

I save the most of things other than food, and yes, that means I have a "stash" of things.  I bought 3 body washes in the past couple of weeks and only paid $2 for all 3.

This is my feeling on coupons and since we don't use them often I forget that I even have them. I am going to try and do more with them this summer. Maybe I can get in a better habit.
