2nd Trimester

When do you ask godparents?

With ds, we waited until after he was born to ask his godparents to be a part of his life.  With this pregnancy, I am feeling like it would be more special to ask before the baby is born.  What's appropriate or right?

Re: When do you ask godparents?

  • I think you should do whatever you are comfortable with.  Personally, DH and I still need to have this discussion and I don't think it's going to go over very well.

  • I don't know if there's an appropriate or right time. With DD we waited until after she was born. This time around, I've already asked the baby's godmother. BUT the reason why I asked her so early is because she was planning a visit out here for now, and so I decided to tell her/ask her so that she could instead plan to visit when the baby is born/being baptized.

  • We'll probably be asking before the child is born, but it wouldn't be the end of the world if we don't really discuss it until after its born.

And chornback, I'm sorry to hear it's not going to be a good conversation for you.

  • With DS we asked before he was born, but with these two we will wait until they are born.

  • I don't think there's a right or wrong answer.  With DS we asked after he was born.  With this LO we asked before because the people we chose live 12 hours away and we wanted to make sure they'd be able to come up.

  • I'm not sure if there's a right or wrong way to do it. With my godson, I was asked before he was born and it was very special anticipating his arrival. But when we had our daughter, we waited until she was born and asked the godparents when they first met her the day after she came home from the hospital. I think any way around it, it's a happy occasion.
