My friend posted a cute pic of her DD on FB in her diaper and she is a butterball. I commented that she is a chunky monkey. She wrote back saying, "she's not chunky, she's a baby." Is that offensive? People tell me all the time that DD is chubby or comment on her fat rolls. I could care less. Aren't most babies a little chubby anyways?
Re: Is calling someone's baby a chunky monkey offensive?
I call LO a chunky monkey all the time... but he has had weight problems so it is nice to see the fat rolls!
I don't think it is. Natalie is a little chunkster and I love it.
I think some people can just be really sensitive about weight at times.
I take it as a compliment when somebody comments on J's rolls. I love them.
My thoughts exactly.....
If she has had weight problems, then she could be overly sensitive to the comments. I have battled my weight all my life and have made it clear (well, trying to make it clear) to the family that comments like, chunky and gordito will not be allowed. I think it can have a negative effect later in life, if the comments don't stop.
ETA: I don't want any weight comments for DS or other future children-big or little.
People need to chill the f out. I don't think it's offensive at all. Chunky monkey=adorable baby IMO.
LOL! That's so funny!
Gordito is diff than chunky monkey IMO. I've never heard anyone descrive a baby as gordito.
Nope. Same thing:
I've battled my weight my whole life as well, and honestly, I think you need to re-evaluate your stance on this. JMO but not wanting to have your baby's weight referred to in any way is a sign that you're not comfortable with weight issues still--and THAT will translate louder than any baby nickname he might have. Now, when he's old enough to recognize the connotation of what's being said ITA, but I think most people would.
this exactly. I've never heard of people getting so offended about weight comments about their children until I got on the bump. Now I see posts all the time labeled "Vent: So and So called DD fat, etc."
I take it as a compliment when someone tells me my DD is chunky.
No, not offensive in the slightest. Please reference my earlier post on this topic. lol.

I understand what you are saying, but I feel that leaving the comments off the table will do more good. I wouldn't have as much of an issue with the comments at this age, but there is no good way to stop them when the children are older. I have learned with our families it better to not permit things from the beginning, rather than trying to stop them later.
Perhaps it's the same by definition but I think the tone is different (just my opinion). I suppose if I spoke Spanish, I would be more used to that term and it probably would not bother me. Since I don't use it, it doesn't sound nearly as cute to me as "chunky monkey".
I speak spanish and gordito/gordita is a cute nickname and we use it all the time for babies. I don't care when someone calls my girl gordita.
Besides, even when I don't have problems with baby weigth, I can understand some parents don't like their babies to be called chubbies or the opposite like peanuts, etc. You never know what is behind that, maybe their pedi has mentioned the weigth is an issue (too much or too little) and for them that could be sensitive theme.
Good point! Only you know your family!
while i agree that there is nothing wrong with chunky babies, babies can be little and still be healthy. my LO is tiny, but he is 100% healthy. i hate it when people look at me like i don't feed him enough just b/c he's on the small side.
