Why are my BP tubes moldy?

Please help! I have a Medela PISA and have been using it regularly for 3 weeks, and my tubes are already moldy. I went to BRU to get new ones and the sales lady told me I was doing something wrong since there is condensation in the tubes every time I pump. Anyone know why this is happening? I cant figure out what I am doing wrong, and I make sure to dry them after each pump.

  • If your cones are still wet from washing them, the water will get in the tubes when you pump. or if you have had milk back up that could cause it too.

  • hmm I was thinking you were turning the pump after disconnecting the bottles to dry them out, but you are.  I'm curious myself.

  • I think it's strange it happened so quickly, but it's fairly common to get mold in the tubing.  I get condensation in them nearly every time I pump.  When I'm done, I let the pump run with only the tubes connected for several minutes to dry them out.  I haven't had problems with it in several months since I've been making sure to regularly do that.

FYI - you can call the Medela hotline and they will send you free replacement tubing if you tell them yours are moldy.  I didn't know that until recently, but they sent the last set for me no questions asked.  They also told me a couple things about killing the mold (boil tubing for 5-10 min) and that it wouldn't hurt to continue using the tubing until my new ones arrived if I boiled them.  HTH!
