pumping and dumping

Ok, a similar question was asked but I want to verify... if I drink, how long should I pump and dump afterwards?  I had heard that it takes at least 6 hours for all alcohol to be out of your system, then someone else told me up to 12 hours??  What do you guys think?

Re: pumping and dumping

  • I have never "pumped and dumped."  The most I have ever had is a glass of wine, and that isn't worth pumping and duming.  If you don't feel drunk, and you are OK to drive, then you are OK to nurse IMO.

  • Yeah tthat is what I want to know. I drank a lot yesterday so I did pump and dump all day and part of the day today.  It was 16 hrs. since I last drank before I fed baby.  I am not sure if this is good?

  • My lactation consultant told me it was safe 2 hours after consumption. One drink will not hurt anything, but if you are feeling uneasy about it there are these cool test strips at Target that I found. You can test your BM and it will either change color for too much alcohol or stay the same for the green light. This eased my mind whenever I have a drink.
  • Okay but I plan to be NOT okay to drive... so let's say I am totally shnockered.  How long should I pump and dump?
  • 16 hours?  I would say you are okay then... I was thinking more like 8-10.  Like I would be fine the next day by lunchtime.
  • The general rule is that if you feel OK, then it is OK to feed the baby. The only time this isn't true is with habitual drinkers because their tolerance is much higher.

  • I've never pump and dumped, even when buzzed.  Just waited until I was sober to pump.  If you are sober then you are okay because the content of alcohol leaves your milk the same way it does your blood.

  • Like previous posters have said if you feel okay then you should be okay to pump. Here are a couple of links that may be useful https://www.llli.org/FAQ/alcohol.html and https://www.kellymom.com/health/lifestyle/alcohol.html

  • I would just buy the test strips--those are what I use every time I drink (unless it really is only like 1 beer which when I drink its usually more than that) I have a pretty high tolerance so going by the idea that if you are sober enough to drive you can nurse wouldnt apply for me and I have the test strips to prove it

The thing w/ nursing after drinking it is so varied from woman to woman even for me there have been times Ive had to pump and dump after only 3 beers (because I didnt eat very much that day and wasnt hydrated) and there have been times I have had much more to drink over a period of time and been okay--For the times the strips have shown too much alcohol (and I've dumped my milk) I am always fine by the next morning when I go to pump again

  • I went to a wedding and drank all night until 11pm. I pumped and dumped after the wedding (only b/c I was engorged) on the way home and fed my DS at 3am. I felt completely sober by then. I was told, if you feel sober, then you're ok. You don't have to pump and dump, if you sober up after drinking, then it's out of your system and milk.

Same here. When I know I've had too much to drink, I will just dump it instead of wasting a strip. I always test when I pump in the morning after drinking and it's always come out ok. The strips are worth the money IMO for peace of mind and for those times where your just not sure.
