I'm in the second tri and we are preparing to set up the nursery. We live in a two bedroom house - the master bedroom is on the main floor and our walk-up attic (1/2 story) is the second bedroom. The master is large enough to hold our bedroom area and a full nursery, so I think we will be sharing a room with the baby for at least 4-6 months and then moving our room upstairs.
My question is: do I need a bassinet or pack-n-play right away? The crib will be IN our room. Do newborns have difficulty sleeping in the crib?
Thanks for your help!
Re: Where does your baby sleep?
Your gonna love this:
He sleeps in our walk in closet (which is off the master bathroom) in a bassinet. Once he outgrows his bassinet, we will move him to the nursery, which is upstairs. The master is downstairs.

Our LO started off sleeping in a bassinet at night, pnp during the day for naps.
I hate to spend money on things we won't use (and I loathe more clutter in the home even more!! lol) so I would say to give the crib a try for a few nights. Chances are, DC will be just fine, but if not, then a baby store is presumably only a drive away
And to answer your question, DS sleeps in a pnp next to our bed for now. We don't know yet if we're buying another crib for him or handing down DD's and getting DD a toddler or twin bed so we still need to decide on that.....
We had our LO in a bassinet for about 7 weeks. Once she was only waking up at about 4:30 and 7, we decided to try the crib and it has been fine. She is still swaddled and we have a sound machine that has ocean waves playing, both were done in the bassinet. I think the consistancy helped with the transition. It did take her a bit longer to go down the first night, but nothing horrible.
As for your other question, I would use the crib. Our LO's room is across the hall and I had always said she would start out in there. The only reason we had a bassinet was because it was a hand-me-down from my sister-in-law.
to answer your question:
there is nothing magical or wonderful about a cosleeper, bassinet or PnP. the baby likely won't sleep any better in them than in a regular crib. most people buy the other sleeping items because it's easier to keep the baby in the parents' room using those things rather than dragging the crib in there. since your crib will already be in the room, do yourself a favor and start putting baby to sleep in there - it will save you an annoying transition step down the road. many babies resist moving to the crib once they get used to sleeping in the PnP or bassinet. you'll be very thankful you won't have to deal with that in a few months!
FWIW, our little man has been sleeping in his crib (in his room) almost exclusively (one or two hard nights are the exception) since about 6 or 7 days old. we didn't intend to do it that way... he just HATED his rocking cocoon sleeper that we had set up next to our bed. we tried the crib out of desperation one night and he slept like... well... like a baby!!
I bedshare with my little one. We both love it and he sleeps from about 12:30am til about 4:30 or 5am. I feed him and then we sleep til about 9 or 10. I think this makes up for all the BF troubles I have had.
We co-sleep. We had bought a co-sleeper and its hooked up next to the bed...and its operating as a clothes hamper at the moment. He's just too snuggly and cute...snuggling with him in bed is my favorite time of the day.
