Car Seat Inspection??

Did you get your carseat inspected??  We just installed ours & DH is all pissy with me cause I don't think it's right.  The base sticks out off the seat a little, and the top of the carrier, when it is in the base, hits the seat in front of it.  I'm usually not too picky about the jobs I give him, but I feel like this one is kind of important!  If you did get yours inspected, did you just show up at the fire dept. or did you call for an appointment?

Re: Car Seat Inspection??

  • We have to make an appointment at our fire dept but I dont know if its just because its a small town

  • I got mine inspected at the state highway patrol post.  My base also hung off the front of the seat and the trooper said everything looked fine.
  • Our hospital had a tech who inspected ours. If your hospital doesn't, I would email your fire and police departments to see how to go about having a car seat check.

It is ok if the base sticks off the seat a little bit, although it isn't ideal.

But the car seat cannot touch the seat in front or it won't work properly in a crash. Our tech said it should have a 1-2" clearance at the least. And you will want to check in the manual to see what position the carry bar needs to be in. Some car seats the handle needs to be up while you are driving, but a few need to be all the way back and you will need even more clearance between the bar and the seat.

  • I'm not sure if it's required but it's certainly recommended in California that you get it inspected after installing.  You can just show up at the fire station and as long as they're not busy, they'll inspect it.  Or you can make an appointment with the CHP.  I'm assuming it's probably similar in your state.

We have to make an appointment at the police station or fire department, but all check points are booked up through August! I am going to the hospital my mom works at to get it checked for free.

I'm assuming the hospital you deliver at would check for you, if you ask, before you take LO home.

  • I would go get it inspected.  My city has 2 police officers who are certified to install and inspect and we have to make an appointment is advance to schedule a time.

  • If you take the time to thouroughly read your car seat manual it will answer your questions about your seat (the base can be off the seat, how much varies by car seat and the carrier should not touch the seat in front of it).

If you and your husband are not going to read the car seat manual then you should really find a place in your area (using seatcheck.org) to have your seat inspected.
