Maternity leave...how long were you out?

I am planning on going back to work.  I thought that I had more maternity leave than I might have (still trying to figure all this out with HR).  Just wondering how long you were out before having to go back.

TIA

Re: Maternity leave...how long were you out?

  • I had 12 weeks since my company is under FMLA.  8 paid (6 with my STD,1 PTO, and 1 the company just paid for) and 4 unpaid.

  • I was out 9 weeks but wanted to stay out 12 weeks but it was pushing it financially if I did so.

I had Tyler almost 2 weeks before school started(I am a teacher) and I only had 1 week of paid vacation time left over from the previous year so I had to come up with 7 weeks of pay on our own.

We have zero time paid leave. It sucked!!

  • I worked for a school district, so I had 12 weeks through FMLA; will take 12 weeks for #2.
  • 6 weeks

1 week.  No pay.  I have my own business and have to work when I can.  I dropped a contract off on my way to the hospital when I was pg with Luca.  I had a closing 2 days after Lila was born.
  • 12 weeks, unpaid.

  • I had 12 weeks off because of FMLA.  6 of them were paid through short-term disability.

  • for #3, 7 weeks, 6 unpaid.  (the paid week was all of my PTO, so I have zero time off outside of holidays until October)

#1, I was in college so I took a semester off.  #2 I was laid off when I was 6.5m along... I was on unemployment until I started a new job when she was 4m old.

  • 7 weeks, but only b/c I am an idiot and insisted on starting the school year. (DS was a July baby) I regret not taking more time and will not make the same mistake when the time comes for #2.
  • 8 weeks with Avery, 10 weeks with Joseph.

  • I took the 12 weeks of FMLA - 100% paid because of STD (6 of the 12 weeks I was on bedrest).  And then I took 2 weeks of vacation after that and 3 days of sick.  So I was out for about 14.5 weeks with pay.  DD was about 8 weeks when I returned back to work.

  • 12.  6 paid in full, 4 paid with STD (60%) and 2 unpaid.

Had I known the 2 would be unpaid I probably would have gone back after 10 weeks.  I didn't find out until my last week off and we had not planned for it.  It made things tight for a few weeks for us, but we managed.

ETA: the first 6 weeks were paid by me using up sick and vacation time.  Had I not had any then I would have gotten 4 weeks paid with STD and that's it.

My plan is to take the full 12 weeks allotted to me through FMLA (assuming my pregnancy remains healthy).  6 weeks will be paid with STD, for the rest I'll use sick time.  Luckily I've been at my job for 6 years so I've accumulated a fair amount of sick time.  I'm hoping to negotiate and extend that to 14 weeks using vacation time, but I'm really doubtful that I'll be able to get my boss to buy into that.

  • 3 weeks with Alex. I had a trial set and I needed to get back for it.  Plus the firm I worked for was small and I didn't really get any paid leave.

6ish weeks with Foster.  I did pop into the office a few times, though, after about 2 weeks.  I had to check on my cases and make sure there was nothing major going on that I needed to deal with.

    You are Wonder Woman!

  • I am planning on 10 weeks, using my vacation/sick time I have accrued.  I will have 12.5 weeks sick/vacation saved up by August, but I want to save 2 weeks or so so that I'm not in a position to have to take unpaid time to take DD to the doc for checkups or if she/I get sick before I am able to build my time back up.
  • 12 weeks and I wouldn't have done it any other way!  I loved having that much time with DS when he was itty bitty.  6 weeks paid, 6 weeks unpaid.  We planned ahead of time for the unpaid part and it was fine.

  • I had 13 weeks paid.  It was a nice perk to working for an otherwise unpleasant firm :)
