sleeping/back problems

I am in my 14th week right now and since about the 12th week, I've been working on sleeping on my side regularly.  I've always moved around in my sleep going from my back to my side and so forth. Now that i'm trying to stay on my side, i feel like my entire back is out of whack. i sleep with 3 pillows but i toss and turn A LOT in the night. To me, the most comfortable posistion is when i'm in a modified child's pose with a pillow under my belly.  My back pain is pretty bad but i'm not sure if it's resonating from my back or my ribs. ugh. so uncomfortable. poor DH has been giving me back massages almost every night. today it was so bad it was giving me a headache and i almost wanted to go home. i was wondering if anyones experienced this type of discomfort and what they did to alleviate it. help! thanks in advance.

Re: sleeping/back problems

  • i've had lower back issues even before i got pregnant. i normally go to a chiroractor to have my back adjusted and it works wonders everytime. A few weeks ago, it started to act up so I went back to the chiro (can't remember how many weeks I was then). I walked out of the doc's office feeling normal again Give the chiro a try. With your uterus growing, it's shifing your pelvis which may pinch a nerve and cause back pains. I plan to regularly go to chiro and get my back adjusted until i give birth.

  • I would recommend prenatal yoga. I've been very lucky during this pregnancy and didn't have too much back pain, but I think the weekly prenatal yoga classes helped a lot!
  • Hi Jodie!  What kind of bed do you have?  Foam top?  Coil springs?

We have a coil spring bed and bought one of those foam mattress toppers from Costco.  It has been a godsend for my back pain and has made adjusting to sleeping on my side so much easier!  Hugging a pillow between my arms and legs also helps.  I hope you're able to find some relief soon!

  • I hug a pillow between my legs, which helps a lot!

  • Thank you for all of your lovely suggestions. I'm going to try to motivate myself to get back to yoga & I've doubled up my pillows under my head (which helped immensely). I was talking to DH about possibly getting a new bed since ours is about 5 yrs old! Yikers! It's a pillow top so it's been pretty comfy but i think it's starting to wear down. We have a bed in the spare room that we might try sleeping on but the double pillow under my head helped out a lot.  We also went to target a bought a body pillow so we'll see how much that helps. Right now i have a regular pillow under that i hug and another that i put btwn my legs. Don't want to have to spend money on a new bed if we don't have to, since it would be ANOTHER expense. If all of those don't work, we may try a matress pad. We shall see, there's still quite a way to go! Thanks again ladies!! =)
