I am delivering at Paoli Hospital, where they offer labor preparation and breastfeeding classes. I also received a brochure from Main Line OBGYN for classes from a place called, "We're Having a Baby". I cannot find this place anywhere on the internet.
What did you choose for your classes? Why?
Re: Main Line OBGYN ?
I am also delivering at Paoli. Since this is my first LO, I took the Prepared Childbirth Series class which includes a tour of the maternity unit. It was a good class. I knew most of what was taught, but did learn a few things. I think it helped DH a lot.
I was thinking of taking the breastfeeding class, but I can only BF while I'm on maternity leave, so I didn't bother. I'm hoping the lactation nurse can help in the hospital. I also have women in my family for support. I'm not too concerned if it doesn't work out, she'll be going on formula anyway after 3 months. I have heard from ladies who took a breastfeeding class that they were glad they did.
First, I have to say that I teach CBE. With the hospital classes, they tend to not cover in-depth comfort measures. Instead, it's more of a script telling you what to expect and what happens at the hospitals. I tend to recommend that if you are trying for an unmedicated delivery, you seek out a non-hospital affiliated class but to definitely take the tour.
When I was expecting my first...and not involved in CBE...I believe I took a recommended BF course from my then OBs office (which was MainLine OBGYN and it was NOT the one taught by the Paoli IBCLCs). I walked out and wad told "good luck breastfeeding". Nursed for 1+year and am now a breastfeeding counselor. The LCs at Paoli are great, I didn't deliver there, just know them, and breastfeeding is about LOTS of support early on. Can be an uphill struggle, but you'll learn quickly as you'll be doing it 24/7. Good luck!
