Almost 3 and ZERO interest in potty training....

Has anyone been here before?

Blake will be 3 in less than a month and literally has no interest in using the potty whatsoever.  We've been trying to let him run around naked or in underwear and he just stops, goes on the floor, and resumes what he was doing.  He doesn't get at all upset or concerned that he went in his underwear or on the floor.  He'll tell us he went, but that's about it.

He doesn't like sitting on the potty, despite letting him bring books or a race car in with him to keep him busy.  He wants off that thing right away, and I think it would be a mistake to force him to sit there.

When he wears a diaper or pull-up and soils, he won't tell us.  He's not bothered by it at all.  He would seriously sit in his dirty diaper for hours if we let him.

Maren was a late potty trainer - she was a bit over 3 when she was fully trained (including overnights).  But by this age, she had already had some successes with using the potty for peeing, recognizing the signs, not wanting to be soiled, etc.

I'm not sure where to go from here.  I planned to mention it to his ped at his 3 year visit next month, but I'm just curious to hear if anyone else has experience with a kiddo that just doesn't want to potty train.  Has anything worked?

October will mark 6 years straight of changing diapers.  I'm sooooooo done.  Please help me!

  • I don't think that's abnormal for boys.  My mom said PT me was a breeze, but my brother... he pooped his pants until he was 5! LOL (he would so kill me if he knew I told anyone that.lol)

I think we PT Kaitlyn last Summer.  She turned 3 in July.

Have you tried stickers?  lil candies? something that might be an incentive to go on the potty?

  • I feel your pain, only mine's almost 3.5, and I'll have a baby in less than 8 weeks.
  • We are having some success, but it's not going as well as we had hoped.

About a month ago, C took off his diaper one night, announced he needed to potty, walked to the bathroom and went. Since then, he refuses to wear diapers, but will not always tell us when he's had an accident or will refuse to sit on the toilet when we tell him it's time to try. We've been having him in Pullups alot, b/c like Blake, if he's in underwear he'll often just pee on the floor and continue about his business. One morning earlier this week I think we'd gone through 5 pairs of underwear just by lunchtime. It was his "idea" to start this business, but some days he could care less.

However, yesterday I started a sticker chart and everytime he actually goes in the toilet he gets a sticker. He had far more interest and success today and I really played up the whole getting a sticker idea. I drew lines on the chart and I told him when he had stickers covering all of the lines he would get a hot wheels car. I started small, with just 5 lines, and by dinner time  tonight he had filled them all, only having 2 accidents today. We'll up the stakes starting in the morning and make it like 7-8 stickers to get the next car.

     Good luck!

  • Our Pedi told us to not even bother with DS until he was 3, he had no interest in it what so ever. But just before he turned 3 last year we did the 3 day potty training method, It took us a week for pee trained, and 8 weeks for poop, and 6 months for night time. I have the ebook, it was posted a few times on the parenting board, it you want to readt it send me a pm with your email, I'll send it to you.
