Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Anyone have a tongue tied baby?

DS is 1 month tomorrow and we have had a lot of trouble nursing (painful latch, swallowing air, etc). I have been to two la leche meeting to work on his latch and still he won't open his mouth wide enough. Today while he was at the chiro he started crying and she said it looks like he has a slight tongue tie...anyone experience this? I have a call into my Lactation Consultant.

If your DC is tongue-tied, did you have surgery to fix it?

  • Yes, but it's not affecting his eating so we're not doing anything with it.

  • DD is tounge tied.  She has not had her's snipped because it is not very severe and she does not have a problem with feeding.  My pedi told me that we would snipp it if it became a problem.

  • Yes, but my pedi snipped hers when we were in the hospital after delivery.
  • The only reasons a DC would need to have it snipped is if feeding was in issue, they couldn't stick out their tounge or it effected their speech.

My DS is tounge tied and this is what our pedi said.

Our LO's was snipped while in the hospital. He has multiple mouth issues; posterior cleft palate, high arch hard palate, and a smaller mouth. We were hoping that snipping the fenulum (sp?) would help and could not hurt, so we went ahead with the procedure. Unfortunately it did not help with his latching to the breast and he is still using special nipples (Haberman) so he can feed well.
  • My DD has "moderate" tongue-tie but thankfully has not has not had any eating issues.?

We met with an ENT already and have opted to have it surgically fixed at 1-year. The reason why we are choosing to have it fixed then is because we do not want her to have any speech issues. The ENT told us that when a pedi snips it when they are young, there is almost an 80% chance that it will reattach at some point and you will have to have it surgically fixed down the road.?

  • DS was tongue tied and also the front frenulum is very attached but he had no trouble nursing so we did nothing.  He did need speech services but it was from not talking.  He's fine now with speech.  DD is also quite tongue tied, but no probs nursing.  Doc says we might want to snip her though.
  • If you are having issues, even if LO has little tongue tie I'd get it fixed. My LO was not bad but had many issues eating and it helped him for sure! best of luck and the best advice I got for BF was KEEP AT IT! I did even after crying every single day and I think we figured things out finally,LO is 10 weeks

and here! if she was having problems i'd have  it fixed though!

  • my friend's DD did and it was affecting her eating and the ability to BF. . they did have to have surgery to correct it.
  • Oh lord, we have been living through tongue tie hell over here. My Grace had both an anterior and a posterior tongue tie, which we didn't realize for her first 3 weeks. Feeding her was horrible, and she was losing so much weight that the pedi said I had to start bottle feeding her. So oviously, we got her tongue snipped. It made a huge difference with her tongue mobility, feeding, etc. If you're having issues I'd have it clipped, it was seriously no big deal, and whatever you do, do not introduce a bottle! (We've had more issues with that than anything else, it's been hell) PM me if you have any questions!

  • I'm wondering if this may be the problem with DD.  She's gaining weight, but feeding her is really painful no matter what I do and how many lactation consultants I see and how much I work on her latch...

  • DS was tongue tied. Pedi snipped it at our first visit and it made a world of difference with his latch. My poor nipples had been beaten up but after the snip he was able to latch much better and no issues since.
