Sleeping on tummy

DS started getting heavy eyed during tummy time so I allowed him to fall asleep since he was so content, as soon as I turned him over to his back he cried. So I put him on his tummy again and he fell right back to sleep. I didn't leave the room while he was asleep on his belly. He seems so content. Anyone have their LO sleep on their belly instead of their back?

**Raising hand**  - both my sons are tummy sleepers.

  • I do and am like you. When I'm in the room and watching then it's fine with me. Naps are all of 5 mins when she tries to nap on her back. It just doesn't work for her.

  • Yep. DS1 was a tummy sleeper and ds2 is a tummy sleeper.
  • DD is a tummy sleeper.  That's the only way she'll sleep.
  • DS is a tummy sleeper.  We fought with him for the first 4 weeks trying to get him to sleep.  He wouldn't sleep for longer than an hour or two at a time.  He hated it!  He would nap so well when he was laying on his tummy on my chest, so we tried tummy sleeping one night.  He slept for 5 hours straight.  He loves it and it's the only way he will sleep.

  • We do.  It does make me a little nervous because we are "breaking the rules"...but for the first 4 weeks he would only sleep an hour or two on his back and it took that long sometimes to get him down.

It started with naps now its all the time.  He does really well and already moves his head from side to side several times and has great head/neck control.  I won't lie though...at night when I'm not constantly checking on him I do worry and don't sleep so great...I think it will get easier the bigger and stronger he gets.

  • DS is able to lift, move and support his head very well already. Is it really "against the rules" to let them sleep on their belly? My Mom was surprised when they told me in the hospital to always put him on his back to sleep. She said she always had us sleep on our belly.

I only say against the rules because every class we went to/pedi we have talked to said always do "back to sleep".  Its hard though.  Every LO is different and I think you have to know your baby and do what is best for your family.  We were not getting any sleep and we knew it would work for us so we made the decision.  I was also always put on my stomach to sleep.  DH and I feel that our DS already has good control and we watch him closely when we are awake and are comfortable enough to put him on his tummy at night.  I can't say I don't think about it a lot at night still but I feel it will get easier the bigger he gets.

  • DS is the worst nap taker ever.  Just yesterday I my Mom was watching him and she tried putting him on his tummy to sleep.  She stayed right there and watched him the whole time but he slept 3 hours!  I'm thinking my LO is a tummy sleeper.  I will still put him on his back at night though because he does sleep 4 hour stretches at night.

I put him on his tummy for naps, he's just so much more comfortable and content that way.  I only do it in the PNP in the living room and check on him constantly.  We still put him on his back at night, though.  I'm sure it's fine and he'd be fine to sleep on his tummy at night (My DD was a tummy sleeper, but that was 14 years ago before the "rule"), but I just keep thinking how terrible I'd feel if something happened knowing all I've heard is "Don't do it!".
