? about while PG

I've been reading WTEWYE and i just saw a part where you can't color you're hair while PG... Did any of you? I have light blonde hair, that I color lighter but I actually put the color on my roots- which is what it's saying not to do. I asked a few girls at work, they hadn't heard of this...so I figured I'd ask my experts ;)

 TIA!!!!!!!!!

Re: ? about while PG

  • I had my hair colored at 10 weeks because I couldn't hold out any longer.  They say if you want to err on the safe side, wait until you're out of the 1st tri, but I couldn't really find anything that proved that the color that they use now is harmful to your baby.  If anything, you could feel quesey from the fumes, but I was fine.  The products that salons use today are not the same products that they used years ago.  If you want to play it safe, ask your OB, but my doctor laughed at me when I asked him about it.

  • Yes. I waited until my second tri, because (a) I was too sick to go to my appt in my 1st tri and (b) I personally would've gotten sick from the smell anyhow.  After talking to my OB & stylist, the consensus was that it was okay to color once per trimester and when lightening, not to take the 'bleach/lightening agent' all the way to the scalp.  With highlights especially, this is not noticeable.  Also, your hair is most likely going to grow a lot faster than usual, so you may want to consider going a lil closer to your natural color to make it blend/ last longer.  HTH
  • My mom owns a salon and I asked her about this when I was first PG.  She basically said that that's kind of outdated advice.  The only thing she said was that sometimes your hair changes b/c of the hormones in pregnancy so it may react to the dye different than it used to, so it might not change to the color that you want.  But even that she doesn't see very often.  And she told me highlighting is completely fine.  Obviously she isn't an expert or anything but I trust her and her opinions about this.

My OB and the guy that cuts my hair said the same thing your mom said.

  • i did semi-perm color to cover my gray in the 2nd trimester; stylist said it would be fine
  • I asked these lovely ladies right around the same time and I dyed my hair the next day.  No worries honey!
  • I would not have been able to survive 9 months without coloring my hair!
  • ha I'm glad I'm not the only one thinking about my hair color while TTC ! lol ...I felt kind of vain thinking about it...but oh well! :) thanks for the advice ladies!!!!
  • I got all over foil highlights (I'm a dark blonde and had lighter blonde and a bit of auburn put in) at week 8 b/c I had to go to a wedding in my 10th week.  Timing was just based on when I could get into my hair person.  She had a little one last Christmas and although she didn't measure out the hair color powders for the mixing, she did use it on her clients throughout her pregnancy with no problems.  For her the biggest risk was weighing out the powder (because of the chance you could inhale it) which wasn't as much a "risk" but something you just prefer not to do because it's an irritant.

My little one hasn't been born yet but everything looked great on the 20 week ultrasound.  All organs looked how they were supposed to, so apparently my vanity hasn't seemed to get in the way of organ formation (always a plus).  I did get a bit nauseated from the smell (when I was under the steamer and when they were taking the foils out) so take something with you that you know you can trust in those cases when you walk along and hit a very strong smell that doesn't agree with you.  HTH
