How concerned would you be?

Maren has got some little red bumps all over her belly, side, under her left arm, a couple on her bottom, and some on her leg.  They don't seem to be itching or anything, but they look like little ant bites.  She has had them around her mouth for about a month now, but I just attributed those to drool under her paci.  The rest I just noticed.

She hasn't been eating well, but is teething like a mofo.  She cut one tooth on Wednesday and another looks like it might burst through at any moment.  She's also been a little crankier than normal this week, but her schedule has been pretty off with Noah in summer camp and us having to take and pick him up.  (It's pretty far away, so lots of car time.)  Also, teething could = her crankiness.

Anyhow, would you be worried about the dots when everything else appears to be fairly normal?

Re: How concerned would you be?

  • Could it be heat rash?  Also, eczema can look like little red bumps.  DS broke out into what I thought was an allergic reaction under one arm, but it was actually eczema.

  • I was thinking heat rash too.  Is it normally raised like ant bites?  Also, we really haven't been in the heat today.  We just ran a couple of errands this morning.  Would that still make sense?
  • I would bring her to the Dr. just in case, because that is how I am. Does it itch?

  • I've never dealt with ant bites, so I don't know what they look like.  But, yes, heat rash is usually raised, IME.  And, I find my kids can get it even just from being clammy/sweaty/warm against their carseat, stuff like that.

I can't remember the actual name of the skin condition, but it's a strep infection of the skin.  DS got it once and it looked like that sounds like it looks (get it)  :).  It can spread so we got a rx cream from the dr.

  • I recently took my 2yo DS to the pedi for a rash (which I normally wouldn't do in absence of any other real symptoms) simply because I was a tiny bit concerned that he had had strep that went untreated. Mostly he was as you describe M - just a little "off" and not eating like a football player like he usu does. His cropped up out of nowhere (got a call from daycare at 10am and he didn't have it at 730am when I left him), was bumpy and red, but not blistery or "sand paper" feeling. Pedi attributed it to a viral rash and said it could be gone the next day, could take a couple of weeks. It didn't appear to bother him or be itchy. Not sure that helps any, but there ya have it. FWIW, I wouldn't really be "worried" in your case, but if her symptoms change or the rash worsens, I'd have her seen next week.
  • Could be eczema.  You should try Halo's clothing, called technical comfort, designed to reduce itching and irritation and wick away moisture.  It's made of CoolMax fabric, which is very breathable and keeps LO cooler when it's hot out and would also help if it's heat rash not eczema.
