Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Anyone have experience with Strep Throat?

We found out today that DD has strep throat. She started her 1st dose of antibiotics tonight.

Of course I googled strep throat in toddlers and all this horrible stuff came up about complications such as kidney problems, rheumatic fever, heart problems and now I've got myself all worried.

We were at the Dr.'s office last week b/c she had a cough that just wasn't getting better and a fever, but the fever only lasted 1 day.  At that appt. the Dr. said her throat looked "just a little red" but he didn't seem concerned.

I'm just all concerned that he missed it last week and that she's had it for an extended period of time now. Unfortanately, DD has been battling teething (molars), a cold/cough, and tantrums so it makes it hard to distinguish between all these "symptoms."

Anyone have any experience w/ their LO having strep throat?  Tell me I'm worrying too much. Dang you google, dang you!!!

Re: Anyone have experience with Strep Throat?

  • I don't have experience with my DD having strep throat, but my brother and I had strep throat CONSTANTLY as children, including as toddlers. Don't let the internet worry you. Those are risks if the disease goes untreated. Your DD has the antibiotics, so it will clear up fine.

This is a good opportunity to remind everyone how valuable antibiotics are, and how terrible it would be to lose them due to anibiotic resistance. Please, please, please remember to do your part to prevent resistance by (1) only taking antibiotics for a bacterial infection - they will not kill viruses and (2) always FINISH the entire prescription, even if your symptoms go away sooner!!!

This was me and my brother.  Don't worry- your DD will be fine.  Just remember to keep her away from others for the first couple of days as it is REALLY contagious.

  • My DD has it right now, and its awful!  Unfortunately, we found out after 8 days of a 10 day course of anitbiotics that the strain she has was resistant to the original antibiotics she had.  Like PP said, its so important to finish the medication!  So now, after a 104 temp on Wednesday, we are on much stronger antibiotics and probiotics to go along with them.  The complications you described are what happens when you don't do anything about it.  Strep can be very serious!

Once the fever is gone it seems to be better, although the medication tends to make DD a little drowsy.  We have been reading a lot of books and watching a lot of movies, and cuddling too :)
