Nursing bra question

Do you/did you wear an underwire nursing bra?  They told us at our BFing class this weekend that they recommend avoiding bras with underwire while BFing because it can contribute to clogged ducts.  I'm an underwire addict, & I even sleep in an underwire bra because I'm scared of the girls sagging.  Do I really have to give them up for awhile?

Re: Nursing bra question

  • My tatas are not especially large, so that might be a consideration, but I love my non-underwire Bravado bras.  I always wore underwire bras before.  I would recommend ordering one and trying it out before you write them off.  I also have one from Motherhood that I like a lot.  You will be glad to not have an underwire when you get engorged - and you will.  I sleep in the sleep nursing bras from motherhood, I like them a lot but they are not very supportive so you might not like them.

  • I never thought that I would like non-underwire bras, but since I've been PG and my tatas have enlarged, that's all I'll wear.  They're so much more comfortable.  I totally owe the recommendation to Cristina!
  • Ok, here's my story.

I was always an underwire gal too.  Although all the books & people recommend taking a nursing bra w/ you to the hospital....quite frankly, I don't know how you can purchase a bra w/out actually knowing how big your girls are gonna get when your milk comes in?!  So, the hospital I delivered at had a lactation boutique that sells all your BFing needs (check w/ your local hospital) & I purchased 3 on the day  I was discharged....they just so happened to be the Medela ones (I can search for the exact one if you really really want me to)---I've lived in these since then

Just this past Tuesday, I went to  A Pea in the Pod & purchased 1 underwire & 1 similar to the Medela ones I currently own.  I only purchased the underwire so I can wear it out when I go out in public bc the other ones really are not all that flattering!!

  • I did and I got a clogged duct when I did.  Also, they were insanely uncomfortable to me when I was BFing.  I LOVE my Bravado! nursing bras.  They don't have underwire but I think that the ones I have are Very supportive.

  • I wear underwires and nonunderwires.  I prefer the underwire bra.  But I do currently have a clogged duct (or low grade mastitis - I didn't even know that existed).
  • I was always an underwire girl.....and I could never imagine not..until my boobs filled with milk....lol....The last thing I want is an underwire bra like Blayne says when you get engorged...I love my bras that I have now- no underwire! I bought one at Motherhood and 2 from Target...

I have heard that underwire is not good with BFing....

Honestly the only thing I find annoying and my skin is getting slightly irritated with the fact that I have to wear a bra at night while I am sleeping...I hate having to do this...

  • The LLL leader that instructed my BFing class said that the underwire is only a problem if the bra does not fit you well.  They say to avoid it as a precaution because most people don't wear the proper size bra.

That being said, however, I am kinda large-chested and I own a Bravado non-underwire that you would swear had one.  It is an okay bra, it does the job, but I had a hard time with them and really didn't looooove them as much as everyone said I would.  Their company is also a PITA to deal with because they are super small and slow.  ("Jill does returns and she is on lunch break, can she call you back?" -What!?!)  They also charged a special currency conversion fee because they are a Canadian company.  Next I'm trying Pea in the Pod.
