Pregnant after a Loss

Doc is saying c-section

After my u/s and appt. with the peri I went to my regular ob today. LO is on track to be over 10lbs when he is born...he is in the 98% for height and weight. He is also transverse breech. She said he could definitely move positions but he won't get any smaller so she's recommending a section at 39 weeks. I thought I'd be relieved but I'm actually a teeny bit disappointed. I know it doesn't matter how he gets here as long as he's here safe and sound but I was hoping to avoid surgery. Flame away if necessary.

Re: Doc is saying c-section

  • I think it's natural to be disappointment no to be able to go through with the birth plan you intended (I would be)....You're still early so hopefully things will change before 39 weeks comes around.

  • No flaming here, I'd want to avoid surgery too, but you're right... the main part is that he arrives safe and sound.

  • Wow that is crazy that they are estimating him to be over 10lbs!!! But I would be disappointed too because honestly I don't really think anyone thinks about c-sections right away. But like pp said, it is still early, things may change. At my 29/30 elective 3D u/s they estimated my LO to already be about 3lbs but exactly 1 month later at my 33/34 week appt with my OB she is measuring him at 4 lbs.... so in exactly 1 month he had only gained about a 1 pound. I would just prepare myself because that is obviously why your OB gave you the heads up but you never know things can change!

  • it is natural to be a little dissapointed if you don't get the experience you want, but at least you will have time to get used to the idea and read up on it so you know what to expect.  and like pp said, you are early do you never know how things will go down!
  • ummm....not to question your dr or anything, but you are still pretty early! just because he is pacing to be a certain weight doesnt mean he will consistently grow at that pace.

I was on track to have a 10 or 11 lb baby...in the high 89th percent at 28 weeks. Already at 32 weeks his growth had slowed some and he was only in the 65th%. i will know more next week when I get my growth scan to see how big he is...

but don't lose hope yet! There is still time!

This exactly. First, u/s are not that accurate at estimating birth weight. Second, babies don't tend to grow at steady rates.  I would seek a second or third opinion on the subject. It's really early to be suggesting a c-section...and the transverse breech could present a problem, but there is no reason a woman can't have a ten pound baby vaginally.

Do your research. It is important that you have a healthy baby, but that doesn't mean a c-section is the best way to get one.

  • I think it's awful early to make any calls on anything.

I had a 10lb baby vaginally and you know what - it was the easier of my two births.  It's not impossible to birth a 10lb baby.  If your baby fails toturn, that's one thing, but a suspicion of 10lbs via u/s isn't enough to me to schedule MAJOR surgery.

This isn't a flame, FYI: it's a YOU CAN DO IT!!!  You can.  Don't get defeatest now - baby might not be 10lbs (U/S can be off by up to 2lbs), you might have perfect birthin' hips, your doc might just be interested in having it over with.  Who knows.

But there's no way at 27 weeks that I'd be making this decision.  No way.

  • It worries me when docs say the baby will be big, c or induction early... all that.  I have a friend whose doctor told her the baby will be upwards around 10 lbs and they had to induce early.  He had her so freaked out that they did it.  The baby was 5 lb 6 oz.  He didn't even fit into his carseat without blankets rolled around him!  Fortunately he was healthy and is now a spunky 3 yr old who keeps his parents on their toes.

  • Thanks ladies....for now I'm going to schedule the section just in case but still try for a vaginal and hope he slows down with the growth.
