How to tell baby is done eating

How do I tell when my baby is done eating?  She gets so crazy on my breast and I am assuming that she is full, but then she will not sleep and acts like she wants to eat again in a hour.  She shakes her head uncontrollably or throws her arms and legs all around.  She is only eating for about 5-10 mins.  I am getting so frustrated and do not know what to do.  I feel so bad that I can not read her yet. I also have overactive letdown so I don't know if this is part of the issue.

Can anyone help?

  • It's hard to tell when they're that young so don't beat yourself up for it.

Feed her for as long as she will eat.  Burp her when she starts shaking her head and then try to latch her back on.

Lay back a little and put her on top of you to eat.  When you get a letdown, unlatch her and let the milk flow out into a burp rag (or bottle if you don't want to waste any) for a minute or until it stops free flowing, then help her latch back on.

It is completely normal for her to be hungry 1 hour after eating.  Expect her to eat every 1-2 hours until she around 8 weeks old.  It gets better, I promise!

  • I would try taking a break to burp her and then offer her the breast again, sometimes newborns need to be burped more often.
