Pregnant after a Loss

WWPgAL Do: Maternity Leave

So I'm very fortunate to work for a company who has a generous maternity leave with 6 weeks paid at 100% plus an additional 2 weeks paid at 100% for parental time.  On top of this they offer 4 weeks before birth at 66 2/3% which can only be used prior to the birth, a use it or lose it thing and there is no exception of carrying it over once LO is born.  Starting in the middle of August (I'll be 28 weeks) I'll have to go to the hospital 3 times a week to have a monitor on the baby to make sure all is well and it's not time to induce because of being so high-risk, along with all of my appointments with ob, mfm and the hematologist.  This is already going to make my work schedule very weird.  I also really don't want to lose that 4 weeks of time before but really have no idea when I'll be induced, I just know I won't go past 37 weeks.  I have no idea when to begin those 4 weeks especially with all of the monitoring and doctors appointments.  What would you gals do, when would you start?

Re: WWPgAL Do: Maternity Leave

  • How soon do you have to give them the notice?  Can you kind of play it by ear?  Personally, I'd want to time it to as close to when I think I'm actually going to deliver as possible.  I think it would be hard to say take off weeks 28-31, then have to go back to work until week 37 or 38 or whatever.  I'd maybe try to wait as long as I could, assuming I felt up to it, and then take off starting at 33/34 weeks.

  • hmmm..that's a tough one. I would say definitely go off at 33 weeks since they will induce at 37. Maybe play it by ear. If you go to your appointment and they think you will be induced at 36 weeks (ect...) go off 4 weeks before then. I understand not wanting to waste the 4 weeks, but at the same time, you don't want to use it and then have 2-3 weeks that you don't get paid or have to use your vacation.

  • I would start it at 32 weeks, there will be a few weird weeks before that with your appointments but it will make the time go faster the longer you work for.

  • THat's an awesome deal! I would start at 33 weeks too if the latest you will be induced is 37. That way even if you go earlier, you'll still get to take advantage of at least a couple weeks off. Plus, I'm sure everything will be great with your LO, and your doc will wait until 37 so you get some extra baking time :)
