Baby A vs. Baby B

Question for MoMs (esp. moms of older twins/trips)-- is Baby A ahead of Baby B developmentally?  My peri mentioned something about this to me today (that studies have shown that Baby Bs are more likely to be behind developmentally, have learning issues, etc.).  I'm just curious what other MoMs have experienced.

Re: Baby A vs. Baby B

  • It's certainly not the case for us.  Lucy was baby B and has always been significantly ahead of James (baby A) developmentally.  She's significantly ahead of her peers, and he's very average.

  • Our girls are only 5 months, but seem pretty even so far.  Mary (A) rolled over and smiled first.  Then Grace (B) was the first to roll back to front.  Grace does a little better with practicing sitting also.  Don't know if it makes a difference, but our A has always been 3/4 lb. smaller than B.

  • not the case here too...Baby A (Sam) is about 2-3 weeks behind Baby B (Josh) when it comes to milestones...Josh has always done things before Sam has (rolled, crawled, pulled up to standing etc) the only thing Sam did first was sit unassisted...and that is because Josh was too busy moving to sit still!

  • Nope.  The boys are really ying/yang.  Benjamin has developed the physical stuff much more quickly--he crawled earlier, walked earlier, etc.  Eli is developing the mental stuff first--he babbled earlier, said "dada" first, and is by far more analytical than Ben (he's always trying to figure out how things work).

I think it's so funny how they're so different.  They're both a little ahead of the other in some things, but it seems to balance out.

  • Mine seem take turns  - for example Baby B clapped first, he is stronger with self feeding, he shows more signs of talking.  But Baby A army crawled first and is showing stronger signs of standing unassisted.

  • Really?  That seems like such an odd theory.  The A/B designation is just who is closer to your cervix, it doesn't measure anything else.

It's not like if they called the bigger baby A and the smaller B.

Nope.  They don't hit the milestones at quite the same time, but they have different strengths.  My A sat first and walked first (although B walked just a week later) and is more verbal now.  My B was the first to roll and crawl, and I think has had better fine motor skills all the way through.

  • DS (Baby A) has always been ahead with gross motor, but DD (baby b) is ahead of him in fine motor. I don't think they are delayed, it took DS 2 months to go from rocking on all 4's to crawling while DD crawled later, it only took her 2 days to go from rocking to crawling. They both progress in their own time.

they have been the same, or baby a ahead, or baby b ahead at different times.  right now, and for the past while baby b is hitting milestones quicker.

This is exactly how my girls are...ava's always ahead with the physical stuff and milina is always ahead with the mental stuff...

  • That is interesting. I have read that research shows some parents tend to treat their Baby A differently from their Baby B--subconsciously trying to make them fit into singleton birth order stereotypes so they might (again, subconsciously) encourage Baby A more, thinking that as the "older" twin they should do things first. I think that's silly but the way *some* twin parents are always talking about "my oldest" and "my youngest" in referring to their multiples, and "Well, Soandso's the oldest so of course she thinks she's the boss," etc., I wonder if that has something to do with it.

  • Baby B -DS-  said words first (dada, dog, no no etc.) and crawled first, stood up first

Baby A -DD- said mama first, held bottle first and seems a lil more inquisitive

  • Gray has always been ahead in some areas- but other things Gibby has done first... it's sort of even with Gray being maybe just a tad more ahead (he is baby A).

Gibby is also 8lbs heavier- much chunkier- so gross motor has always been harder for him (rolled later, crawled later, hasn't taken steps yet).

  • Not the case here........DD was Baby B and she has been ahead of DS (Baby A) on pretty much every milestone.  Both of them are in the average range, but DS is toward the later end.

  • No Nathan is baby B and has been a month ahead in all skills up to this point.  Now Joey is pulling ahead in fine motor skills, but my experience does not equate to what your peri said.

  • Our Baby B is a bit behind her sister in gross motor skills, but our Baby A is ahead of most any 6 month old so..... we try not to compare them.

Ditto this.  I can't imagine what the reasoning behind this is...

Mine seem to take turns on milestones, but usually both end up doing something in the same week (kinda cute).  Neither one is ahead or behind overall.

My 'baby a' (Noah) is bigger than "baby b" (Lily), but thats about it.

  • Our girls seem to take turns being ahead and behind on different milestones.  E rolled over first, crawled first, babbled first, etc.  C stood first, got the shape-sorter thing first, etc.  Sometimes I worry more about E's development than C's, but I don't think there's really much of a difference.
  • Mine are still so young so I can't really tell yet, but my Baby B started smiling before Baby A.
