South Florida Babies

If you are bored, tell me your favorite spots in Miami/Broward!

I have lived in the SFL region for about 10 years now and I'm ashamed to admit that when ppl come to visit and ask where they should go, I have NO IDEA where to send them! These past 10 years have been school, work, traveling for work, and visiting family in Orlando.  I never take the time to just enjoy SFL yet so many people travel here for vacations all the time!

Anyway, I'm taking a week off from work so as not to lose my vacation days.  I want to have a "staycation" and explore Miami/Ft. Lauderdale for the week.

I'd love your input on must see places, must eat at restaurants, etc.

Re: If you are bored, tell me your favorite spots in Miami/Broward!

  • We did a staycation a few yrs ago, and it was actually a lot of fun.  We were able to enjoy the city when it isn't the most crowded (wkday).  We did simple things like go bowling and watch a matinee!  Both were completely empty.  At the time we were staying at the beach, so we were on Lincoln Rd most of the time.

Something we never got around to doing, but was on our agenda was a duck tour (Google duck tour in Miami).  It takes you around the Art Deco area and then I think to the stars' homes.

Enjoy the beach!  Take baby to Children's Museum or water park.  I've heard Rapids Water Park in WPB is a lot of fun.

I'm not too familiar w/ Broward, but I know there is a Discovery Museum up there too that baby may enjoy.

Hope you have a blast and enjoy the city!  : )

  • Thank you for the duck tour recommendation! That sounds like a lot of fun.

I didn't know there was a rapids water park around here! I'm going to do that too :)

  • I'm biased, but I think one of the most beautiful and underrated places in south florida is the Deering Estate.  I got married there and my dad was responsible for the rebuilding after hurricane andrew (he's an architect).

It's a gorgeous home - think Vizcaya but not as opulent, more with nature.  Charles Deering (whose home it was originally) was the brother of James Deering (who built Vizcaya), so there are a lot of similarities.  Along with the house, there are nature tours, you can kayak out to a small island, there's a nature center with animals, and of course historical tours.  The grounds themselves are spectacular.  Pack a picnic lunch and go spend a few hours there.  https://www.deeringestate.com/

  • Our favorite thing to do has always been to stroll around Lincoln Road.  We love to just hang out at a sidewalk cafe and relax.  You also see a lot of couples with their doggies and/or strollers.  So, it's very family friendly.
  • Jackie made a few great suggestions. Whenever we have family come in from out of town, we take them to explore the city and I always feel like I'm re-discovering the town I live in - there really is a LOT to do here.

Last time my cousins from Panama came we took them to Jungle Island, The Seaquarium, we explored all the different malls (Sawgrass in particular - they loved that one! And there's Wannado City for the kids, which they looooove), we stayed at the Fontainebleau for a day or two, and went fishing on a party boat. We went to a number of diffferent restaurants, like Bongos, so they could see Bayside, Joe's Stone Crabs and Casa Juancho. We also took them to Disney World.

I think it would be fun to rent a boat and take it around Key Biscayne or try watersports like jet skiing and parasailing. There's also Metro Zoo. Fairchild Tropical Gardens. The Children's Museum.

  • Thank you!! I'm going to try to schedule all of these tips in our agenda! A breakfast on Lincoln Road and picnic at Deering Estates sounds awesome!
