donating cord blood (repost)

IDK what happened to my post.  Sorry, if this is a duplicate.

I was wondering how to go about donating the cord blood.  We're considering this as an option, but I can't find much informatin on local public cord banks.  Does the hospital/OB set this up or do I have to contact an organization to accept the donation?

Re: donating cord blood (repost)

  • I bet your OB's office has info on Viacord (or the other big one...I can't remember the name), but I'm not really sure how it's done. I'm almost positive I got some sort of pamphlet or something in the stuff (magazines, samples, etc) I received from my OB's office.

  • I'll have to talk to him.  I saw some info on Baptist's website that South Miami Hospital accepts the cord blood donations, but it didn't mention Baptist Hospital which is where I'll be delivering.
  • I think you need to have all this decided beforehand because there's a kit for collecting the cord blood. Because Baptist and South Miami are all part of the same hospital system, I'm sure there would be no problem getting the blood from Baptist to South Miami.
  • I'm not sure how you go about donating it but I do know that if you want to store it for yourself you can contact a company like Viacord.

  • You should page Sam (FSUSAMMY). She did this when her son was born.
  • It's very expensive, I do know that.

    About 2000 and yearly storage.

They use a syringe at the time of delivery to harvest what blood they can from the cord.  It's then sent to a place and they cryofreeze it.

I think the other one is National Cord Blood Registry.   You do have to plan it ahead and have the kit.  Almost all doctors do it, but I couldn't afford it anyway.
