Trouble TTC

Newbie - on Clomid

Hi all~

My sister is on The Bump so thought I would join you all.

I have a 4 year old which we conceived during our first month of trying.

We decided to start trying for #2 after the New Year.  I went off the pill in October and had normal cycles in October, November and December.  Of course, when we started in January - BAM! - problems arose.  I just quit ovulating - nothing...

We did 2 rounds of just provera to try to "jump start" my cycle - that didn't work.  After the 3rd round of provera, I did 50 mg of Clomid.  My bw showed no ovulation on that either.  I am now on my 4th round of provera and then will be doing 100 mg Clomid.

I have had tons of bw since the beginning of the year and everything is normal.  All of my hormone levels are normal, no thyroid problem, no problems with anything.

My doctor and I are hoping it is stress related.  Since the beginning of the year my job stress has been through the roof and I have had 4 members of my family go through serious medical issues.  It seems like it is one thing after another.

Since all of my bw has been completely normal, we are going to do the 3 rounds of Clomid before doing anymore expensive tests, ultrasounds, etc.

I find reading all of your stories and posts really helpful.  Thanks for all the info :)

  • Wow, your doctor really jumped right in with clomid, huh?  It can take up to a year to regulate off the pill, first of all.  Between that and your normal hormone levels, it seems a bit premature.  (although generally, if you're not ovulating, your hormone levels aren't "normal")  And just a note, provera does nothing to "jump start" your cycle.  It just makes you bleed.  It has nothing to do with ovulation.

Taking Clomid without proper monitoring (ultrasounds to monitor your follicle number and size, check for the presence of cysts, and monitor your lining thickness) is dangerous.  Also, without tests like the HSG to check if your tubes are clear, you may just be wasting your time completely.

I am not trying to be rude, but I think the way your doctor has prescribed clomid, quickly and with no monitoring, is putting you at risk.  Good luck to you.

  • Are you seeing an RE or a OBGYN?  Sometimes OB's don't catch infertility issues and just prescribe clomid for the heck of it.  I had my initial testing done through my OB's office, and they told me everything was fine.  I went to see an RE after we had been trying for a year, and right away my RE saw that via my bloodwork, my progesterone was low.  OB's are not fertility specialists, and are not as knowledgeable as RE's are.  I highly recommend you see an RE, if you aren't already.

  • Our problems sound alot alike... I went off BC in  September and had 3 normal cycles and then a 90 day cycle that we ended with Provera.

It is true that BC can have effects for up to a year, but my doctor mentioned since I had 3 normal cycles and then stopped having AF that I was definitely annovulatory and probably had PCO.

Since we aren't ovulating thus no periods, Clomid does make sense.

I hope this round of Clomid works for you.  I just finished my first round of Clomid... waiting for O.

  • Go to an RE.

My blood work comes back normal every.single.time.

I have PCOS. Without an ultrasound, neither myself nor my Dr would have never known.

Also, there's a horror story of a woman who lost her tube due to unmonitored Clomid use- you may want to find it and read.
