Baby Names

I find it hilarious when....

People tell you they don't like a name because it's too popular, then you find out their kids name and all you can think is "I know 20 kids with that name"  lol

  • I understand. I also find it funny when people bash names for being different when their own child's name is pretty weird.

  • In different areas of the country some names are more popular then others. YOU may know 20 Ryan's because you live in let's say Massachusetts (it is the #1 name here) but if you live in Georgia, William is far more popular.

So "popularity" really is a relative term depending on what is popular for you.

A lot of years and a million tears finally led me to you.
After 7 years trying to concieve, 3 failed IUIs and 2 failed IVFs, my third IVF was a success!
My Christmas baby turned into a turkey bird! Dillon Richard was born at 34 weeks, 5 days on November 28, 2009 after 10 weeks on bedrest for preeclampsia.

I totally agree.  And it depends on your job as well.  I'm a high school teachers, so I have a completely different outlook on what is "popular" and what is not than someone who doesn't work with kids every single day.  Big Smile

  • To hell with popularity, unpolularity, common, and uncommon names!  I want to name my children something special that I will be calling them for the rest of my freakin' life, whether or not it's in any of the above catagories!  Hahahaaa!

yep. I named DD Emma right when it was something like #1 on the national charts. I'm sure people think I did that because of its popularity or because of friends, but I actually had it picked out since 1995- go see where it was on the list then! People would tell me it was an old lady's name! My best friend's name at that time was Emma and when I moved, I thought I'd name my first after her. Well the friendship faded but the name always was special to me after that. I wasn't going to let a stupid show change my naming plans.

  • I actually noticed this in your post from yesterday! I'm not sure if that is what you are talking about though. Someone mentioned that Madeline was way too popular, but their little girl was named Alexis. Um, Madeline is #64 on the SSA list and Alexis is #13. But yeah I also agree with pp that each person could have a different idea of what popular is based on their close circle of friends/family.

  • To be honest, I'm beginning to think popularity doesn't matter too much.  I mean, with all the names people are using these days, there is not a strong likelihood that there will be 10 of anything in a kindergarden class.  And even so, my dh's name is Kevin and mine is Colleen; neither were ever super trendy/popular names, but there were probably 5-10 Kevins or Colleens in our HS (out of around 400).  We totally survived with minimal confusion.

  • You might not know ANY Olivia's or Ryan's or Emma's, and the name might not be popular in your area, but hopefully, at some point in their life, your child will move beyond your town and social circle and encounter a situation where they are one of many with the same name.

I don't care if people use a popular name, but don't kid yourself that it's "okay" because "there are no other kids named Brayden in our swim group/ soccer league/gymnastics camp. Hopefully your kid will move beyond this and enter the real world at some point, in which their name will be very, very popular

  • I'd rather have popular than Uneek any day!
  • Your last name must be a not-so-common name.  While my maiden name was very uncommon my married name is super common so in my search for baby names it has been key not to use something uber common so that there aren't literally 100 kids with the same exact name floating around the area.

DH gets phone calls all the time thinking he is someone else for this exact reason, common first name common middle name common last name.  It is annoying and we want to prevent our LO from having the same issue.

Amen. Most of the names that are popular are popular for good reason-they're great names that have stood the test of time. I'm not going to go around making up new names or inserting 'y's where the don't belong so that my kid can have a name no one else has.

I'm pretty sure you're in the clear with Schuyler Ro.  :-/

How do you even pronounce that first name?

Schuyler is pronounced like Skyler. It is a traditional dutch name. Doesn't bother me any if you don't like it or know how to pronounce it, but it's not that uncommon and it's not made up. We had a vice president named Schuyler Colfax, and both Sissy Spacek and Michael J Fox have daughters named Schuyler. You are probably more familiar with the Americanized spelling of Skylar or Skylar, but those are just made-up phonetic spellings of a classic and traditional name.

My grandmothers first name was Ro.

    And now you know
