SIDS prevention: Who really keeps their kid's room at or below 66*F?

Dude, my son (and daughter, too) canNOT sleep with their room that cold. No way no how. I tried and spent many-a-nights awake trying to re-warm them.

So, I use a space heater and it has to remain 74*F for him to sleep through the night. I honestly don't think his whole room is that warm, but at least where the thermostat reads the temp ON the actual heater.

What do you do?

I try and keep my house 68-72 degrees when we go to bed. That's what I tell parents to set it at when they discharge from the hospital. 66 sounds too cold to me.

  • brrrrr, I cant even sleep like that.
  • I try and keep it 66 - 68. LO sleeps fine at this temperature although her hands feel cold to touch.

We don't have AC, just a heater so my attempts at temperature control are pretty hit and miss.

  • The recommend range is 68-72.

We keep the house at 72, and then we have a fan on in the room she sleeps in. So that makes it a bit cooler (plus the fan is good for SIDS as well)

  • wow 66? well, DD was born in the winter so we kept the house at 68. Now its more like 72-74, and she sleeps in less at night.
  • I do. My house hovered around that when the baby came home. it was several degrees colder before that. I'd just be sure to layer the baby. but if you and your baby aren't comfortable at that temperature, I'm sure it's fine to raise the temperature. The baby and you need to sleep.

    This exactly!

  • Well, I would say us since we are thrifty and keep the heat at 62 at night in the winter, but the nursery is by far the warmest room in the house, so it never got all the way down to 66.

But our DS was double swaddled for the first full month.  It had very little to do with the temp and more to do with him fussing if he wasn't tightly swaddled at all times.  So, he never got cold.  We ended up dealing with prickly heat instead in late march/early april.

  • We keep ours at 70, plus a small fan in his room.  I don't think I could do much colder than that!

  • We have a thermometer in his room, so whatever temp it takes to keep that at 72 degrees is what we do. Usually our thermostat is set at 70.

    exactly this...but in Celsius...so it's at 22 degrees.
  • We keep our thermostat set to  70 at night.
  • So getting flamed for this, but we have done zero for SIDS protection. Our son sleeps in his crib with a regular bumper, a stuffed animal, and a blanket. Embarrassed

This as of last month when we moved to the crib. The stuffed animal is the seahorse (huge crib so it's very far from the body) and the blanket is wrapped around his waist and legs. The blanket is also tucked under his legs so they are elevated so he can pass gas without waking. LO is swaddled and doesn't roll, so when he starts moving around and rolling we may have to reevaluated the stuffed animal and bumper situation.

  • Our A/C is set at 70 degrees at night.  It's fine for all of us because we all get so hot at night, especially during the summer.  My oldest constantly wakes up in a puddle of sweat.  The baby seems to be just fine with it that cold in the house at night.  We dress him in a sleeper and his ceiling fan stays on.  I don't know exactly how cool his room gets, but it gets cool...it's the coolest room in the house.  Even during the day when the A/C goes back up to 75 his room is the coolest.  We don't keep the house that cool solely because of the baby, it's because like I said, we all get super hot at night, the baby is the same way...he'll wake up crying if he gets too hot.

Embarrassed me too. Thermastat is set to 75*F because I'm not made of money and even then our AC bill is usually over $120 for this stupid apartment (they refuse to replace the weather stripping even though I can see out through the cracks along the doors. LO sleeps in either footed zip ups, long leg/sleeve with socks or the long sleep gown with socks. I have a ceiling fan, tower fan and air purifier running at all times while we sleep so lots of air circulation. As for the blanket I use one large enough that I lay LO down on the top half then fold the bottom half up over her legs. No matter how she pulls or tugs on it right now she can't get it up to her mouth or nose.

  • This is the one SIDS prevention tip we don't really follow.  But we have made the house a little cooler since the baby came.  DS had a low body temp when we were discharged in January, so they told me to work on keeping him warm.  During the winter, we kept the thermostat at about 72-74 and now it's at 75.  At night, he sleeps in either footed pajamas with nothing else or a long-sleeve onesie with a light muslin sleep sack.  During the day, he generally just wears a onesie and I put a light blanket over his legs for naps.  Maybe I'll talk to DH about kicking it down a degree or two at night.
  • We set the AC between 66-68 (depending on the humidity) plus we have a ceiling fan. So it gets cold in our room. I always dress DD warmly enough in footed PJs and mittens (or else she will claw her face all night). She is never cold to the touch and only wakes once to eat. Personally, I would like the room a little warmer, but DH loves it cold, DD hates to be too warm, and DH uses the SIDS argument....so I'm outnumbered.
  • We kept the thermostat on 68-70 in the winter. In the summer, it's 72, with his ceiling fan on low. Sometimes we leave the fan off, though. It just depends on how warm his room feels to me.

  • I would freeze.

We keep our house at 76 during the summer.  I'm sorry, but I'm not wasting money and turning my house into a refrigerator.   If it were 68 degrees outside, I would wear long sleeves.

DS stays in only a diaper unless we go out.  He drools so much anyways, so it really cuts down on laundry.

  • For the love of Pete - 66 DEGREES?!?!

I live in Phoenix. My a/c is set to 78 at night and my electric bill is stil $220-$250. It's not going lower than that. She does have a fan in her room, though.

This is a test. This is only a test.

Our house is 112 years old, and has original windows. We couldn't get it down to 66 degrees in the summer time even if we wanted to.
  • We keep ours between 66 and 70.  We have a swamp cooler and its pretty cheap to run compared to AC so its not expensive to keep it that low.  I'm a little crazy about the temperature in her nursery and don't want to overheat her.  I bought a small temperature gage that tells me what the temperature is in her room.  She actually sleeps way better with it between 66 and 68.
  • I set it to 72 or 73 degrees, plus his ceiling fan is on.
  • The ideal temp is 68-72.  In the winter, it's 68, summer it's 72.  He also sleeps in a Halo sleepsack and has a fan going in the room, all things to help reduce the risk of SIDS.
