I read you should check with your pediatrician to see if they do it but I don't know how realistic that is. Doesn't hurt to check - or at least their recommendation. A friend of mine took her daughter (she was older though - 5 or 6 months old maybe?) to Claire's I believe and said they had special infant tools and such.
with DD#1, we did it at the pedi's office at 4 months (Bootin and Saverick). We switched pedi's after that and our current one doesn't do it. She found another pedi in the building that does and she was willing to do it for her patients at 6 months. Since I thought 6 months was too old because she was already grabbing, I felt that we had to do it earlier to avoid her pulling on her earring and causing an infection. SO....
3 weeks ago we went to Claires at the mall! I was sooo scared prior to going but my friend had taken her daughter there years prior. Well...after it was all done, I honestly think it's a lot more sanitary than the pedi's office. The pedi uses the gun and the earrings are prepacked and sterile. At Claires, each earring was prepackaged/sterile and already set in a disposible gun. And so after the piercing, it's thrown away. The only thing I didn't do was use their cleaning solution. I used 70% alcohol like the pedi recommended with DD#1's piercing. From day 1, the earrings never seem to bother her at all.
I haven't pierced Rena's ears yet but our pedi office does it every other Friday. I honestly would not take a small baby/child to the mall to have it done.

My in-laws gave Elena a pair of earrings and her ears aren't pierce yet (hint hint).
I asked a friend where she got her daughter's ears pierced and you are not going to believe it: she took her 3 month-old girl to a tattoo parlor!
