Do you think it's safe to do Habitat for Humanity when pg?

I am supposed to volunteer with Habitat for Humanity this Saturday with people from my summer law firm job.  People at work don't know I'm pregnant yet.  (I just started last Monday and am waiting to get my NT scan results back before I tell them - I should get the results next week.)  But then I found out we have a group "volunteer" day with Habitat for Humanity this Saturday.  I put "volunteer" in quotes because although we can opt out if we need to, it is assumed that we will all come, and given that my summer job is basically a two-month long job interview, I don't want to come across as someone who doesn't volunteer and isn't a team player.

I figured it would be fine and that I could just try to do some of the easier stuff, like hammering or nailing things.  But then I got an email today saying that our project is going to be insulating a house.  Do any of you know if it is safe to be around insulation when you are pregnant?  I'm planning on calling my doctor to ask but I figured it couldn't hurt to ask here, too. It's not like it is asbestos or anything, and I am sure they will have us wear masks and proper safety equipment.  If it isn't safe, I'm not sure what excuse I will come up with to avoid the semi-mandatory volunteer day.... Ugh.

  • I would definitely check with your doctor, but as long as he says you are ok with insulation, then go for it. Just listen to luckystarz and take care of yourself.

I know how those outings at firms can be for summers. if you miss it, it is a big deal and your absence is definitely noted. Even though they tell you it's optional. I totally understand where you are coming from on this one.

But if your doctor says no, then you have to tell them for medical reasons you are unable to participate, under specific instructions from your doctor. If they ask why, you can say you would rather not discuss your personal medical history, but can refer them to your doctor if necessary.

  • I would go out and buy a mask with a HEPA filter before you go, HH probably can't afford them and it will be extra protection for you and baby.

I worked for a design build firm when I was pregnant the first time and I was on job sites all the time, climbing ladders and lifting granite slabs.  Take it easy and if you feel like you are overheating make sure you take a break and if anyone gives you the side eye you can let them know why. GL and ave fun!

  • I would not do it.  I was supposed to volunteer with Habitat two weeks ago (I signed up before the BFP), but I backed out.  While a lot of things are safe to do, you never know what stage the house will be in.

Every time I've ever volunteered with Habitat, they're either way behind or way ahead of schedule and they never do what was planned for that day.  I didn't want to risk it being a painting day or a roofing day, even though when I signed up they said it would be yard work.
