? for moms on painless contractions & labor ?

i have been having contractions over & over for the past couple hours & recently they have become so strong it looks like a huge ball ontop of my stomach rather than IN there :) -- my question, though, is:

had any of you started labor with really strong contractions & no pain? My mom described her labors as if they didn't hurt EVER -- until it was time to push but lately EVERY WOMAN says "oh, you'll know, it hurts so bad you cannot even talk" ... i am not resisting that statement but i do wonder--

has anyone out there had a fairly painless initial part of labor ??

i have contraction everyday at night lately but never this powerful! I feel like i can see the silouette of this little nugget! :D

thanks moms !!

(p.s. I have never really been one to have bad cramps & I have a VERY high pain tolerance,, my tattoo removal DR tells me ;)

  • I could still talk during my contractions (with a little difficulty) after my water broke and I was 8 cm.  But they were uncomfortable for sure.

  • I had tons of BH's when I was pregnant.....when the real ones started I knew it.  They were totally different.  Mine felt like a wave of tightness around my hips and radiated to my back.  The real ones were much lower than I had expected.
  • Everyone is different, that's for sure. I blew my real  contractions off as BH's. Went into my 36 week check up telling them my BH's were picking up and was 4.5cm dialated. Went straight to hospital and had a baby 3.5 hours later.

Both my labors where like that .

for DD, my water broke and then didn't feel my first contraction until a couple of hours later

for DS, woke up to labor .. i liked the first one better, because there was no building of contraction .  just started in active labor.

  • My contractions weren't bad at all.  They were 4-6 minutes apart but not painful.  I didn't think they were the real thing either because everyone said, you'll know, but I didn't.  I went into the hospital and was almost 7 cm dilated!

  • I went in for a routine appt and was 5 cm dilated and then went into L&D and dilated to 9cm without any pain...
  • I had no pain or discomfort my entire pregnancy, but apparently I had contractions because I was 3cm dilated for 2 weeks and 4cm for a week.

The day I went into labor I had strong contractions, but they felt like bad period cramps. I had them for a couple of hours before I got an epidural and then 30 minutes or so after the epi- I was ready to push.

The pain tolerance for me was very managable. I am like you, I take pain pretty well. However, I am glad I had the epi because it just made things so much easier. :)

  • I had no pain...contractions were 4 mins apart and I didn't know it, just like period cramps...thats it!  Went to the hospital to get checked out...they admitted me right away. I def did NOT know I was in labor, even tho everyone told me I would know.
  • I had no indication i was going into labor besides cleaning the house lik e amad woman 2 days before. Other then that I woke up and my water broke. no pain or anything. I didn't have any contractions until they hooked me up to pitocin and cranked it up. I was about 4 cm dialated when i really started to feel them.

  • I wouldn't say mine ever hurt that I couldn't talk through them due to the pain BUT I would have to concentrate and relax my body and focus to work through them. So I wouldn't want to talk but I wasn't incapable of talking. if that makes sense. labor was never really painful for me I was joking and laughing the entire time, the only time I actually yelled out was at crowning and again when the shoulder popped.
  • I have a very low pain tolerance and was induced.  Before they gave me pain meds, the contractions were uncomfortable but not to where I couldn't talk through them.  They were nothing like the pain from a broken bone, which I've experienced a few times.  I'd take contractions over that any day.  I could talk through them, but it was easier to focus on my breathing during them.  I think labor is different for everyone.
  • I had a few BH contrax, nothing really bad. Didn't realize I was in labor till my water broke. After that the real contrax started coming fast and furious. They hurt, but it wasn't really bad. I couldn't walk thru them, but I was able to talk. I'm such a wuss though, I got the epi almost right after we got to the hospital. After that, I didn't feel a thing, just a little pressure when I was pushing. No pain, though. Hope this helps!
